MEETING OP COUNCIL. The Council of ill© Canterbury Automobile Association met last night, Mr J. S. Hawkes, the president, being in the chair. • -Mi' A. S. Tho only objection the meeting liatl wilh reference to associating themselves with t.lio Canterbury Automobile Association -va q Ihe question of controlling the amount received iu the county from subscriptions. Tho dslogates assured the meeting that thore need. be no anxiety in this respect. All moneys revived would bo spent for the -benefit of the ctnrnty, but the authority to do so must be sanctioned by the Council as tho controlling body. After discussion, and questions had been answered, it was decided to form a branch of the Canterbury Automobile Association in ■ Ashburton, and officials under the rules were elected. The ' "delegates suggested that in future separate balanco-sheets, giving the receipts and expenses of each branch, be insertal in the annual report. The report was adopted, and handed to Mr Anderson (Ashburton) to Jay before the Ashburton brunch. The Westland branch of the Association wrote, thanking the A'ssociatio'n for its assistance and grant towards the bridging of certain creeks on the Coast' road. The Defence Department wrote, stating that a chauffeur had been appointed to drive the Association')}soldiers' carat Hanmer Springs. It was strictly to be used for "joy riding" . soldier patients, and for no other purpoao. Xurse Maude wrote, thanking the Association for having her car renovated, free of :all cost to her. The Mayor of Akaroa wrote, acknowledging tho Association's thanks for entertainment provided for returned soMiera at Akaroa. He assured the Association that any returned soldiers who honoured Akaroa with a visit'would be well looked after. The Soldiers' Car Committee reported that "during tho month of February the car did 28 trip 3, carrying 195 soldiers and-sisters, and covering 908 miles. The car Had.been in great domand, and the committee had 'deoided that it was only to be used for the Hospital and Sanatorium patients. Three trips had been made to Akaroa, and on each, ocoasion tho men were hospitably entertained by the Mayor and townspeople. The thanks of the Association'were due to them for their kindness. / > \ The question of the oharge for towing cars up the Otira Gorge came up in connexion with a letter received from Dr. Hargreaves. He had, been charged £2 10s for a tow, for a light, car. It was deci'ied-to refer'the matter to the AYest Coast branches, and to the Tourist Department, to try to get some reasonable uniformity in these charges. The Roads Committee's report, which waß adopted, stated, inter alia, that a light had been arranged for on the Carlton bridge. Thar IDaity Factory corner, at Tai Tapu waa to be. improved. ■ Herrick'a corner, at Tai Tapu. was also to beimproved. The committee had -written to the "Wairewa County Council, offering to contribute to the work of bridging the - areek on the Hilltop road. The - Selwvn County Council had. accepted the Association's offer in regard to. the bridging, of the . water-races between Bnrnham and the Selwyn liver. The financial statement showed & ciedit balance, on March Ist, of £294 8s Id. On Mr CJarkson's motion, the following resolution was passed: "That a conference of the sovernl Associations in the South Island be held in Christehuroh, on a . dato to be fixed, and that a committee be appointed to consist of "the chairman of each sub-committee, vis., Messrs Mills, Nicholls, Johnston, Lochhbad, Clarkson, and the president, as convener, to make the necessary ' arrangements." • On the president's 'motion, it was decidcd to interview the Superintendent of Polioe, in . connexion with the better control and iegula- ■ tio of motor and other traffic on tho city strata. It was resolved that the Boad Committee
should hoH a conferenco in Ashburton at an » early date, with the newly formed branch of the Association in that county. Mr F. W. Freeman, who has reoently returned from thc_ Conference of Civil Engineer?, save a brief report of the diecuesion > which had taken place on the question of load-building.
