The Governmenti department just furnished a complete account of last year's Customs returns including beer, tax, and whafc the Trade did give to the Treasury in exchange for £5,000,000 spent over their bars was £850,000, ]>ot £1,500,C00. which was blatantly advertised. A direct cost to the country for clearing up last year's liquor mess was estimated by competent authorities at £555.000. The cost to the country through lost andl shortened lives and through injured efficiency was incalculable.'
