PUBLIC HEALTH.

PREVENTING INFLUENZA,

It is urged by thoso connected with tho administration of health matters in Christchurch that the public generally would bo extremely well advised, if they persisted in somo of tho precautionary measures the necessity for which was emphasised during the influenza epidomic last yoar. It is particularly advisod that the injunctions regarding the thorough ventilation of dwelling-houses should be as strictly followed as was the case during tho period that tho epidemic was raging; and also that all possible steps should bo taken by tho individual to keep his or her general state of health strong, in order that the individual may bo able to resist tho disease-producing germ. It is considered not altogether improbable that there may be a rocrudesconce of the epidemic; in fact, during tho past week or so at loast one acute case of influenza has been reported and dealt with. In another instance a proposal to isolato a certain township for 48 hours was under consideration, in viow of a case of influensa having been reported, and in order that a house to house inspection of the township could be made.

Much assistance can be rendered those charred with tho administration of public health matters if cases of influcnia aro reported promptly. As will be' noted from tho lxealth returns for tho; Canterbury-West Coast Health District, givon below, there ( were eight cases of influenza reported in the North Canterbury portion of tho district dor-.' ing tho past week. ,

For the week ended noon on Mondlj the following cases of infectious diseases were reported in the Canterbury-West Const Health District: — 1 -

Grey: Diphtheria, 3; enteric, J. North Canterbury:' Diphtheria, 1; scarlet fover, 2; tuberculosis, 3; septicemia, 1; measles, 1; erysipelas, 1; influenza. 8. South "Canterbury: Diphtheria, 4; puerperal 6opticremia, 1.
