COST OF LIVING.

FRENCH TACKLING PROBLEM.

(By Cable.-Press Association.—Copyright.) (Australian and Cable Association*)• PARIS, March 1.

The Food Ministry's scheme of purchasing certain foodstuffs in England and America, for the cheapening of the cost of living, comes into operation on Thursday. The scheme lowers restaurant prices by 30 per cent. The Ministry acknowledges its indebtedness to Great Britain for furnishing shipping on favourable conditions, also the co-operation of Mr H. C. Hoover (American Food Controller). It is pointed out that 3.25 francs latterly spent in Paris was equivalent to 2.8 francs in New York and 1.7 in London.
