Owing to the lack of hotel accommodation at Ballina, several holiday visitors slept aboard a river steamer which was moored at the wharf. In the early hours of the morning the steamer overturned, the cause of the accident being unknown. Two men sleeping in the cabins -were drowned. The women and children on deck were saved. It is believed that other lives were lost.
