BOWLING.

(NOTES BY "SKIP." Now that things are returning to norma!, dub secretaries would do well to arrange "a few inter-club matches for ! Saturday afternoonsV So far, very few clubs have met each other this season. Many players look forward to a good friendly game on other greens, and many firm friendships have been made through such meetings. Early in „ the New Year I hope to hear that many of the clubs have made arrangements for at least two or three friendly games. Last Saturday afternoon four rinks journeyed from New Brighton to Lytte!toii*ti> take part in a friendly game on the port green. A most enjoyable afternoon was spent, although the port won by a fair margin of points. W. Drake won his game against 1). Heudcrson, end lio is to be congratulated on his success against such a brilliant player. Sinclair, who has made rapid r>t tides during tho last two years, had a very even game with Beaumont- —who, bj- the way. has just returnod from camp, looking fit and well. The Major of New Brighton (Mr F. Kibblewhito), who is an ardent bowler, has not been seen on the groen so frequently this season as in previous years. His time has been fully occupied with municipal matters, and during the epidemic period he did yeoman work for his borough. Now that things have quietened down his many friends expect to see him take the same intereet in the game as he has done in the past. The ncwly-elocted member of Parliament for Palmcrston North (Mr J. Nash) ir. one of the best-known bowlers in the Dominion. For many years now he has been looked upon as a champion skip, and he fully justified this claim when ho won the Dominion Tournament in Auckland four years ago. Many congratulatory telegrams • were desnatched to him from bowlers all over the Dominion, and his win was a most popular one. Tho Christmas Tournament, winch rommer-ces at Timaru to-morrow morning lias again drawn a full number of entries. Clubs from Dunedin and other placet? in tho-vicinity will he represented, while Christyhurch clubs will be well to the fore. Canterbufy, Sydenham.- Linwood, and Edsreware aro sending rinks, and it would be no surprise to see the coveted chamoionship fall to the Cathedral City. With good weather this ought to be one of the enjoyable tournaments in the South Island.

An interesting bowling event took place sit Auckland on December 16th, when an eight rink friendly match was played on tlie West End green _ between ex-Canterbury bowlers desirous of celebrating the anniversary of theif province, and representative Auckland bowlers. The arrangements wore ma:!e by Messrs TV. A. Cooke and F. A. Saxton, both -well-known Christchurch men. and the match was won bv Auckland by 182 points to 158. The d;iy was perfect, and a most enjoyable time was spent. It is now intended to make the event an annual one. The ox-Canterbury representatives were:— Messrs H. E. Kast, S. Hardley, Shine, JfeKobfe, A- Hardy, Bridge. Coltman, Davidson. W. Hardley. G. Hardley, J. TV. Haidlev, C. Hardley, Swan, W. Ccoke Grange, F. A. Saxton, McConnell. Crump, M. Taylor. A. Parsons, Truman, Jacks, Greon, Coltman, Jeffs, Mijllins. Steele, Garrard; Shanley, TVakf. Stenson, and Hallows. Mr J. TV- Hardley, tfje president of the club, welcomed the visitors, and Mr Garrard, president of the Hemuera, .Club,. on behalf of the visitors, returned thanks.

; Professor Maxwell "Walker added a few congratulatory words for the most enjoyable and pleasant day the ex-Can-cer bury players had given them. * A very strong rinK is leaving from the United Club to take part in the Dominion Tournament, held in Auckland v on January Bth. Mr 1, "SVoolt will bo skip, and he mil ho assisted/by Measrs AJlmitt (No.- 3), W. Brown (No. 2), and Dollan (lead). Several of the city elubs have made arrangements to play Progressive Pairs on the day following New Year's lXiy. This is getting quite a popular competition, and on many of the greens it is looked forward to with a considerable amount of interest. The other day a new player was worrying an old hand abputHho duties . of dub officials. "And "what does that pompous playfcr do?" the novice asked, indicating a well-known ekip. The old hand winked to a friend, and said: "Oh, wo keep liitu about the premises to use on rising players who think they are hotter than they are. When their heads begin to swell we pat thorn in his rink. His mission in life is to keep anyone below the rank of skip as humble as possible." . An incident occurred on the United Bowling Green last week which is worth mentioning. J. Brackenridge and Woods were engaged in a Singles competition, and when half-way through the scores were equal—lo all. Woods was playing well, but is comparatively a new player as compared with his opponent. He was about to play a shot on the fore hand, which would most likely have given Brackenridge three or four points, but was noticed by the umpire to change from the fore to tho back hand. Curious to know why ho had done so, he questioned Woods, who replied that Brackenridge had advised him against the fore hand shot as it would probably be to his detriment. Tho umpire who mentioned this matter considers that Brackenridge "played the game." DOMINION TOURNAMENT. (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND. December 23.
