SALARIES AND STATUS.

The Canterbury Education Board has received from the Department of Education particulars regarding the new regulations gazetted dealing with teachers.

The new .regulations provide for an additional increment of from £10 to £30, in addition to tho previous £10 per annum. The additional allowance to married women teacliers will not be payable to widows, nor in casos where the husband is in receipt of a regular salary or wagies. Pupil teachers will. now be; referred to as junior teachers, and they will be classified as 3rd, 2nd, and Ist grade, instead of Ist, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year. Salaries will be at tho rate of from £55 to £65 per annum, with a boarding allowance, if necessary, of £25. Pupil teachers and probationers, heretofore, were required to serve at least" two years before proceeding to the training college, but if they have the necessary litorary attainments, the new regulations require from them one year's service only. Training College students receive an increase of £15 per annum. There is no provision now lor the appointment of pupil teachers with only a Standard VI. qualification.; Additional assistants will be appointed in schools with an average attendance of about 520, and in secondary departments with an average of about 60. The capitation in Grade O. schools has been increased from £8 to £9. " The additional allowance to headmasters of district high schools has been increased from £30 to £50. A teacher who has occupied a temporary position for twelve months may now claim the advantage of the annual increment, subject to the approval of the Minister. Under the old regulations a teacher's salary could not be reduced so long as the teacher remained in the same' position, but under the new regulations the limit has been made five years. Training college students. and pupil teachers who have been on active service and have not completed their training: college course may be appointed in substitution of pupil teachers or as supernumerary teachers in schools in training college centres at salaries ranging from £120 to £150, which includes an increment of £10 for each year of military service. They are required to continue their studies as students at the college in 6uch a way as directed by the Board. Students who have completed their course and have been on active service and are subsequently appointed to positions, receive an increment for every year or part of year they have been on active service. A vice-principal at a salary of from £500 to .£550 is to be appointed to each training college, and the maximum salary of the principal has been fixed at £<00, starting from £650, the previous maximum.
