SYDNEY, December 21. A serious fire broke out this morning in George street, in the heart of tho shopping centre. It gutted the Crown Studios"" and damaged Fanner's, Roberts's Hotel, and five other shops. The fire apparently started in the Crown Studios, and aided by a strong wind quickly spread. At one time it looked as if tho whole block would be destroyed, lie cause of the outbreak is unknown. The damage is roughly estimated at £150,000. (Received December 22nd, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 22. It transpires that Mr Richard Carter, an Auckland engineer, staying at Roberts's Hotel, was the first to notice the fire in the hotel. He gave the alarm, and was badly burnt about the arms in escaping.
