The 2-30,000 acres which the Duke of Sutherland proposes to put on the market are only a portion of his vast possessions. He is by far the largest landowner in the United Kingdom, being laird of more than a million and a quaiv ter acres. The great bulk of his property is in the county from which he takes his title, but he is also a landowner in Shropshire, a coalowner in Staffordshire, and has important interests in Canada. Five years ago the Duke offered to sell the county some 200,000 acres of deer forest, but; the J negotiations came to nothing.
