MAGISTRATE'S COURT. . Messrs W. T; Lester and P. Knights, J.P.'s, presided at the Lvttelton Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, when W. Black, Peter Miley, John Ballard,- and Thomas McLean, seamen engaged in an oversea ship, were jointly charged with absenting from the vessel without' having previously obtained permission. A representative of the ship's age&ts stated that the vessel had gone South whilst the men were a bant, but it would bo necessary to return the men to the ship 'before she leaves for an oversea port.' - Tho Bench decided to convict each of the accused, and sentence them to 14 days' imprisonment, on the understanding that' they would be put aboard tho vessel at a southern port at the first convenient opportunity. -- BED CROSS FUND. The proceeds from the concert held in the ;Lyttelton Oddfellows' Hall last Saturday e'venirig, amounted to £10, and this eum has been forwarded by th* promoter, Mr G. Taylor, to. the secretary of the Lyttelton Branch of the Red Cross. "Guy Fawkes Day" gave the boys and girls in the port an opportunity to do some work on behalf of the Red Cross Fund, and their collective efforts resulted in a sum of £7 13s 2id being raised, which has been forwarded to the local branch of the Red Cross Society. The children took up the work of collecting enthusiastically, one party representing a nurse, a wounded soldier, and a Boy Socrut, collecting £1 17s.
