CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

SPRING MEETING. CANTERBURY CUP AND OAKS DAY. Though a strong nor'-wester was blowing all day, the weather yesterday was much better than on the opening day of tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring Meeting, and it was surprising that the attendance was not larger than it was. The track was particularly fast, and, with the assistance of tho nor'-wester, two Australasian records were broken. Eilboyno clipped 1 1-oth sec off Sweet Corn's record of lmin 11 1-oth sec running the distance in lmin lOsoc, and Surveyor broke Conouoror's long-6stsblishcd record of 46 , l-sth sec for four furlongs by covering I the distance in 4.5 3-otii s©c. Bsckbts ' of favourites did not have a very good dav, but there was plenty of money available, as the machine, which was more expeditiously worked than on tho first day, handling £43,944 10s as against £43,115 for tho corresponding tiav last year. Thirteen useful platers wont to the post for the Ashley Handicap, and they provided an interesting race. After a good start the field ran in a bfinch, with Hylans showing just clear of the leaders, while Royal Star and Spyglass got chopped back last. There was a considerable amount of bumping during the race amoiig the rear division, ana the positions of tho leaders were never materially altered, except that Hylans dropped out of it, and Claverhouse eventually won nicety. 80-Peep and Meli, were withdrawn from the Oaks, fearing six good-looking fillies to parade for the Ladies' classic. Punka, on the strength of her firie form on tho ■first day, was well supported, but Afterglow, Moutoa Ivanova, and Lionskin had plenty of followers, while Karo also had friends. Punka made tho running for four furlongs, and then Karo and Bonville went out and forced the pack. with Punka in behind them. Half a mile from home Karo was in the lead, with Punka and Afterglow challenging:, and all. three appeared to be doing their best. Punka stayed on, and won by.a neck, Afterglow being a moderate third, Taken all round they were a good lot of fillies, and rather above the average usually Been out in the Oaks. Michaela was made almost an even-money favourite for the Criterion Handicao, from wheh Marsa was withdrawn. The favourite was not well placed at the entrance to the course proper, but she was running on well at the finish, and might have won had there been another furlong to go. Wrestler, Mill o'

I Gowrie, Acre, and Inah were weTl placed at the end af two furlongs, but they failed to run on, and finished wejl back. Assisted by the strong nor'wester, tho winner put up an Australasian record of lmin lOsec for the six furlongs. Tlie field of two-year-olds that went out for the Irwell Handicap was full of future possibilities, for it is seldom that a better-looking lot have been saddled tip in the Dominion for a i*vo-year-old handicap. , The bracketed pair Affectation <and Rose Wreath, were made warm favourites, and they raced well, though somewhat green, j The favourite got away well, but ] could not hold his position, and bad fallen back into fourth place at the end 1 of two furlongs, and thus early Amytlias looked a winner. Crenides struggled to avert defeat with great gameness, but was beaten on his merits, as L. H. Hewitt had him out in front early and: handled him well. A number of the lot that finished well back will see a much better day, as they were very green. The Jockey Club Handicap proved to be a very open race, and though Onslaught won nicely by a short length, and registered his third successive win, it did not look any certainty at the distance post. Parisian l>:amond,

who was a great paddock tip, was well placed all the way, but was not good enough to beat the Antagonist colt at> the weights. Of the wholp field Rorke's Drift and Killard were*the only two competitors who got a bad passage, both of them being last after going half a mile, just behind Ascalaphus. The Canterbury Cup! which looked to be a foregone conclusion for (SasanoF or Kilmoon, proved to be one of the greatest struggles ever seen for victory in the race. J. Campbell on Snub, not finding the pace solid enough, went out in the lead after going five furlongs, and sent his mount along all the way. With half af mile to go the favourites closed I up, but Snub was not to be denied, ana struggling on in tho gamest manner, he got home by a 'short neck from Kilmcon, who was a head in front of Sasanof. , Considering the strong nor'west wind that was blowing, the time for. the journey was really good. With a strong nor'-wester behind them, tho sprinters in the Electric Plate, headed by Surveyor, put up a fresh Australasian record for half a mile. The previous record cf 46 1-oth eee was put up on a sim'lar day by Conqueror, when he won the Welcome Stakes by a narHßc ™«rgin from Dundas, away back in 1897,' and after standing for tw«nty-one years Surveyor reduced it to 45 3-sth sec in this year's Eloctrie Plate —a record that will probably stand for an-

other half-century. Surveyor got an advantage at the start, beine on tho move when the barrior rose, put Torfreda immediately honied him, and looked a winner at the distance, but tho Nassau colt finished on and won by a neck, the rest being some d-'stance away. The dnv's racing was brought to a close with Good Dav being made a warm favourite, in a field of twelve, for the Epsom High Weight Handicap, and he sent his supporter's home in a good fnme of mind by winning, but he was lucky to do so, for had the rid or of Sir , Fanciful kept Ijis mount on the rails, ! Gray on the favourte would never have been 'able to squeeze through as he d : d. , Sir Fancifui's supporters were unlucky i in not getting first dividend, but had 1 Linden, who finished third, got a good | run he must havo won, as he jvas traveli 'r.fr foster than anything over the last ' furlong. Ardmore was another that gnt) ! a bad run in the e-ir'y stare* of the race •or he might have cot into tho money. Following are details of the racing:—
