INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC.

j IS THERE A SHORTAGE OP I DRUGS? With a view of ascertaining if a shortage of drugs in the Dominion was in any way responsible for the influenza epidemic, a "Press" reporter interviewed Mr McArthuj. the proprietqr of Loasby and Co., chemists, of this city. It appears that there is a shortage" of many drugs, but that shortage is in no way responsible for the, present prevalence of influenza. In fact, it appears that Messrs Loasby and Co. are having exceptional success with one of their mixtures, it "proving to be an effectual rerqedy for influenza and consequently in great demand.

I While in the new .premises recently opened by this well-known firm on the corner of Cashel and Colombo streets, opposite Ballantyne's, th© Pressman took the opportunity of inspecting the appointments, fittings, and stock. The comprehensive plans for handling a truly up-to-date chemist's business were at once apparent. The fittings are most elegant/ and the* handsome show-cases, enable Mr. to do more justice to much of his stock than has been hitherto possible <Jwing to lack of space. For instance, there is a wide and varied range of manicure goods, toilet ,and skin powders, creams and pastes, high quality 'soaps, etc., that is exceptionally fine.

Then again in brushware Loasby and Co. offer clients both qualities and values that are far better than what is generally procurable. For wearing quality and sound usefulness, as well as elegance of finish, nothing can approach the products of the old-estab-lished English and French houses, of whose goods Loasby and Co. make a speciality. In hair-brushes, toothbrushes, shaving-brushes, amd nailbrushes they pot quality before everything else, • On entering the dispensary,. our re» porter quickly realised why this firm dispensed during the last four years, under the management of tho present ■proprietor, nearly as many prescrip. tions as were handled in the previous eight years. Scrupulous cleanliness and accurate methods ,are essentials to proper dispensing. Both are watchwords at Loasby and Co.'s. Our reporter then visited the laboratory. H V e drugs are regularly tested ,and kept up to proper . strength. It appears that many of them are liable to deterioration, and it is only by this periodic testing that Loasby and Co. are able to maintain the high standard of dispensing, nothing short of which will satisfy them.

Loasby and Co. for a long time have specialised in parcels post. People from every district in Canterbury, and many all over New Zealand, have come to realise that they are no farther from Loasbys than their nearest post office. Thousands upon thousands of letters held by their files testify to the confidence placed in them by those who live away from the city. Letter orders are despatched same day as received. Goods are selected with care and balance of money returned with tho same exactitude as if patient or customer were at the counter. Canterbury folk who have not previously tried this method of getting quick service are recommended to give this firm a trial. 1
