COUNTY COUNCILS.
ELLESMERE. The monthly meeting 1 of the IJlleemero Couny Council was attended by Cas. J. Cunningham (chairman), J. S. Boag, P.-J. Lemon, and James Quigley. A letter from the chairman of the Selwyn County Council regarding the working of tne water race system was tiuly considered. Cr. Lemon expressed the view that the end of July would be a more suiiablo time than the month of October for shutting off the water for tho annual race cleaning, as farmer were not so busy in July and less incoawould bo caused stock owners through the races being dry. It was decided to discuss this matter mora fully before the time arrives for next year's cleaning. , . , Tht> water works caretaker was requested to submit to tho Council at its next mooting n list oi tlyse who had not cleaned their Mrs Helen McVinnic -wrote, agreeing to pay half th« cost of concrete channelling alonj her property frontage in. Station street, Leeston. , , It was agreed that tenders should bd called for tho channelling as soon as the consent of other frontagers was obtained. The tender of C. Bartolomeo, at 3s per chain, vra3 accepted for cleaning Ludomann s drain, Lakeside. , . The Leoston riding members lecommemiea payment of cavitation to tho Leeeton Fire Brigade on the* basis of tea active members at 15s each; that ft floor should bo put in, tho Fir© Station, and that unions should ba obtained for some lengths of hose. After hearing il r P. B. Climie, orgj*niser for tho-'Canterbury Progress League, who was present by invitation, tho Council carried ft resolution endorsing tho aims and object® Of the League, and agreeing to pay its full quota of £55 for one year. It was further agreed that, pending legislation authorising payment in full, tb& Council should pay such eum as could legally bo eubscribed out of unauthorised expenditure. The engineer presented an extensive report noon tho work carried out during tho month, ife also submitted a plan showing tho true lino of road loading to the Fishermen 8 Point, at Taumutu, as requested at the previous meeting, at which a letter was received from the EJlesmere Drainage Board, asking that the road should lie formed and otherwise improved as it was th<> only track by which timber could bo hauled t-o tho outlet culvert ut Lake Ellesmerc. It was decided to send a copy of tho report aDd a tracing to the Board. , , , .. ' Tb© water workß caretaker reported tliat although thore had been several freshes in the Rakaia, the supply of water to the racas had been well maintained. There had been many blockages in the races through gorse getting in. Tho tender of Mr F. B. Clausen was accepted for the supply of 500 dog collars at lljd each. A tender of 5s lid per cubic yard for carting and spreading 140 yards of metal to McEvedy's road, received from Mr F. A. Franks, was accepted Mr James McConnick interviewed tie Council respecting tho drainage from tho Lceaton Hotel property, about which a letter had boen received from the Health Department. The councillors decided to make an inspection. ' ■* ' , f, -T» It was decided to instruct the Councils solicitors to take proceedings against the owners of a Maori reserv© at T&umutH to comnel them to clean a drain. Tho engineer waa instructed to present a report upon tho condition of all the Council'a reserves.
