THE "WORKING OF THE TOTALIS ATOR. The criticism which has heen levelled in the newspapers at tlie working of the totalizator at Riccarton 011 Monday is regarded by some who were present as without justification. * A ptomiuent steward stated to a .representative of "The Press" yesteiday that he was watching the totalisator carefully all day r and although in one or two events the races to the windows aupeared full, the amount shut out would bo very small considering the totals. He.is satisfied that it was more the fault of the public than the staff. "Tho same number of windows,'.' lie added, "were open for this Mooting as at tho National and practically the samo staff. At the National Meeting on tho last day the average was £B*o2 per race, while yc6terday. it was £6003. The real trouble ,is with tho public, who -will delay until the last minute. The Club will not allow tho .racing.to bo delayed on account of tho totalisator, and the staff are instructed to close tne machine as near time as possible. There is n full half-hour before each race when investments can ho made, and the public only have themsolvcs to blame if they are shut .out. One of tho most serious causes of delay is!by those people who make a practice of going to the 10s and £1 windows for investments that they can get at the £5 window. There are numbers o[ eases of 20 ten-shilling and £1 tickets in consecutive order from tho same window being paid to the samo man. By going to tho £5 window and getting cither two or'four tickets respectively, they would permit of at least 15 other i>oople being attended to, besides a considerable saving in time .to themselves."
