BIG FIRE IN WELLINGTON.

TIMBER YARDS AND BOX FACTORY DESTROYED. (press association telegbam.) WELLINGTON, November 5. A fire broke out in a timber yard in Taranaki street to-night and destroyed a gieat quantity of building material, it is believed to liave started in tue Wellington Co-operative isox Co.'s yard, t.hA timber in which, chiefly witfte pine, was destroyed, also a big twostoreyed iron factory full of macmnery. a t>vo-aiorcyetl bricii factory, occupied by tlie same company, was compieueiy gutted. Aiiilar's West Australian Jiardwoods Co. lost practically ail tlieir stocks or timber, also a worKShop, but tiie oince was saved. The stock of timber in C. bymon's yard and a largo rack of moulding were completely destroyed. A great, feature of the fire was the saving of Jessie street from destruction. It is a narrow thoroughlare lined on each side with two-storeyed wooden houses. The brigade made a splendid figut and after two hours' hard work the danger to Jessie street was averted. About tiiirty or forty houses meanwhile had been stripped of furniture, and tho Mayor placed the Town Hall at the services ot those whose homes tad been dismantled. No estimate can be given at present of the losses, but they must amount to many thousands of pounds.
