Whether its annual visit to our shores has beon preA-ented during the last four voars by tho submarine. or whether the sea-serpent has merely escaped notice in tho excitement of the times, it is impossible to say. Certain it is, however. that the "monster" had not been hoard of for four years until it "appeared'' recently oft the Orkney Islands. Particulars of its "return ' have reached Mr John D. Hamlyn, the naturalist, who has been making vain attempts to determine its species. Hero is the account which has reached him: "The boat's crew, trying for cod, were working their Hues off North Head at Swona, when, within a few yards of the vawl's side, a monster appeared such "as the men had never seen before —a close view of which caused no little apprehension. The head resembled notiung so much as that of a huge ox. with enormous nostrils. It laid its head on tho boat for a minute or two. then sank tinder the water. But a few minutes later it reappeared, some way off, still looking towards the boat. Theu it sank again. "The creature seemed to bo covered with hair, which lay wot and smooth upon it."
