COUNTY COUNCILS.

SPRINGS. Tha monthly mooting of the Springs County Council, held at Sprmgeton on Thursday, was attended by Crs. J. W. Kime (actingchairman), J. Stalkrr, W. J. Ales. Thompson, and C. Wolfe. Hr Fred. Keast asked to havo drainage improvements effected on his frontage on Goodrick's road. Tfco matter was deferred to next meeting, members to look into the position' in the meantime. The engineer reported upon the steps he had taken, as instructed at the previous meeting, to have a road at Lincoln leading to tie railway dedicated as a public road.. He thought tho Council's wishes would be given effect to. Cr. McMillan reported that two loading elevators had been ordered for tho recently purchased stono crusher. Theeo would obviate the necessity of a good deal of shifting of tho engine and cnishor, which would bo necessary with only one loading elevator. Councillors decided to inspect tho machino before it is returned from the engineers. Regarding an application recently made to the Canterbury Automobilo Association for assistance towards the coat of repairs to the Main South road, a letter was received from the secretary stating that a committee had been appointed to go into the matter and report. In his report, the engineer stated.that the roada were in fair condition, considering tho weather conditions experienced during the last month. I'ho work carried out consisted chiefly of road patching. The asphalt on the Lincoln bridge had been repaired, but it would require top dressing in tho near future. The engineer was authorised to procure an additional scoop and to take steps to enforce an order to clear gorse from road frontages. It was decided to ask Mr H- to prooeed as soon as possible with his shingling contract in Greenpark Riding. It was also agreed that the Accommodation road, Greenpark, should be ploughed ready for grading. On Cr. McMillan's. motion, the engineer was instructed to inspect Jervis's road, which was reported to be in need of improvement. Ors. McMillan and Kime were appointed the Council's representatives to attend the Canterbury Progress League conference in Christchurch. ASHLEY. Tho Ashley County Council met at Loburo on Friday. Present —Messrs Hush Ensor (chairman), Geering, Hiatt, O'Halloran, Parish, and "Wilson. Messrs Geering and Wilson wcro asked to it tend the conference called by the Canterbury Progress League fo r . The terms offered by the Hayland Estate with respect to th<» nurchase, by the Council, of tho land severed by the Gany bridge approach road, were accepted. The Council endowed the circular, of tho Bangitxkei Council, in which objection was taken to the decision of tho of Public. Works to calculate subsidies on a maximum rate of lis a day for labour. A grant of £ 150 was made to the Red Cross Society. Final notices were ordered to bo served.on occupiers nonlectinff to clo&r gorse and broom from a publio drain. Towards the close of the meeting the Premier's telegram, announcing Turkey's request : for an armistice, was reoeived, and its importance duly appreciated.
