CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

« METROPOLITAN* MEETING. NEW ZEALAND CUP DAY. The thousands of people of both sexe who had come to Christchurch for Car nival Week, looking forward to a grca time, had their ardour somewhat damp cd when they arose in the morning t< see that the c'louds were sailing up fron the south-west, but after breakfast am a perusal of tho morning papers, fron which they discovered that the wa: that has been draining tho best of ou manhood lor tho last four years, look ed as if it was 50011 to comc to ' dramatic close, all and sundij perket up, and sallied forth to Hiccarton, iw caring whether it rained or did other -n-ise and whon, shortly after arrival the glorious news that Austria hat practically given in, everybody was Jiappy, fi"d <iitl not euro wnat, happened. The racing tnroughout the day was ui to the' Lest standard produced at l?iocarton, and no compiaint could b« made with tho secretarial department, starting, or tho raco track and enclosures, "which wero all up to the JiHiest 'standard, but the people whe handled the totalisator wore much behind tho times, in all departments, and it is high time that the club's official; tock a hand in tho machine arrangements, for the tedious waits were very irritating. Tho attendance .whs quite up to the average, and the falling oif in the totalisator receipts must bo put down to tho incapacity of the people who were handling the money rather than to tho public's reluctance to invest, for during the. day many thousands of pounds wero shut out puroly through the slowness of those at the receiving windows. A total of £48,036} passed through tho machino, as against £53,10(3} for the corresponding day last year. Tho meeting was opened with the Spring Hurdle Handicap, for which there were only threo starters, Vacuum being inado an odds-on favourite, but Kaan rode a shocking race on him, atid instead of making use of his advantages waited on Good Hope until the last fence, and was beaten easily for speed ijr tho run home. St. Kevin never managed to get hear tho loaders, and is evidently only a shadow of his former self. Me tec was a warm favourite for the Spring Plate, with Onslaught and Maioha well backed. The favourito'3 backers got a bad run, as he was the last horso to get going in a strung-out Weld, while Algidus, Braid, Onslaught, and Maioha, wore out forcing tho pace. Meleo improved his position as the race wont on, but Tyould have needed to he a very good horse indeed to have won. Algidus and Braid wore done with two furlongs from tho post, and Onslaught took charge from Maioha, and always holding him won by a Jong neck, and Htayed on much better than was expected of him. Moleo and Royal Star, who were at the tail end of tho field in tho early stages, finished well up, and may do better before the meeting closes. Karo galloped on something's heels two furlongs from home, and fell, but she was in a hopeless position at tho time. From a straggling start Taunaha was first out in tho Linwood Handicap, and be led all the way to win easily. Claverhouse and Spyglass were always well placed, but' Wild Night, fcjjeopy Head, Oratress, and Larissa were a' long way back in the early stages, though they finished on weH. Tau- j •naha, who has for a long time had a for speed, won very easily, j and looks like developing into a good •horse. lie is by Demosthenes, from Mangaroa, who comes down from the same family as Hilda. Killard was tho only late scratching for the Cup, and the eighteen that) paraded for the big race were a wellconditioned, good-looking lot. and quite up to the standard of former years. As usual Client \ was somewhat fretful, and sweated freely. Sasanpf*. who was wearing a bandage on his oif foro leg,. went down -tvell, and all the rest both looked well and did good preliminaries. Tho paw was slow over the first half-mile, as Mazama, Dusky Eve. and Kilrush took 53 2-sth pec to g6t there just ahead of a bunched field and the same trio wore still ahead of affairs when the mile post was reached in lmin 45sec. The order witts the same to tho straight; then Kilrush went on in front, but it was only on sufferance, for Sasanof shot through on the rails and reached t'fte post full-of running four lengths in front of Rose Pink. Menclaus was a good third, just ahead of his stablemate Mascot, -who was with Battlo Song. The winner was undoubtedly the best on the day at the weights, and even if, Rose Pink and Menelaus had got better runs they could not have beaten h;m. Client was never prominent, nor waa Snub. Kilrush ran a good raco and! was \he first into the straight, but was gone almost immediately. Margerine, vyilic, Devotion, Battle Song, and Manama were well enough placed through, the race to have won if they wer© good enough. The field for the Welcome . Stakes was one of the best that has ever been paraded for the event, and though Surveyor won like a good horse, and was staying on, it is not any certainty that he was the best in the raoe, for a number of those he beat wore far from being as seasoned as he was. Warplan© ran like a good colt, arid so did Affectation, and both of them will seo a much better day. Murihiku showed a wonderful bui£t of snted, and it) looks as if Mr McDonald has got another sprinter that may equal Torfreda for brilliancy. Gloaming was made a very warm • favourite for the Derby, and he never gavfc his supporters any anxiety for after stopping in second place for four furlongs he went to the front, and was never afterwards troubled. the surprise of the race was Hfe&thercbte's forward running, for he has not been in the b6st of- health for some time, but • he struggled on -with the utmost gamoness. and it was only in the last stride that the mor<r seasoned Kilmoon beat him a head. Afterglow's running was fi°od enough to make anyone give her * r£yal chance in the Oaks.
