LOCAL CELEBRATIONS.
The surrender of Turkey -was further celebrated in Christchurch shortly after noon on Saturday by a public mooting ■ in Cathedral square, which was address ed by the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) and Messrs G. T. Bootli and J. J. Dougall. j Facing the speakers was a lorry on ; which were some convivial spirits at- ■ tired in fancy dress, who wero celebrating the occasion, which was reprc- . sented by a fat farmyard turkey liang- , ing by its feet from a cress-bar, "dead. The Mayor said it would not be lone before Austria-Hungary "caved in," and then there would be only the one monstrous enemy to deal with. Tho 1 end of the war was in sight, and ho felt) , supe peace would bo declared during his term of office. Mr G. T. Booth said the lane had, been long, but we had got to the turn- . ing. We had had four years of dis- . aster, but the dawn was now revealed. , The offenders of Hunnish crimes must bo made to pay for them. (Applause.) i We must see to it that the ravenous i German beast was made incapable of doing further harm. Bulgaria, Turkey, ■ and Austria must be made to pay theu [ reckoning but that was of secondary . importance. The main osential was U> . drive Germany, the prime assassin of the world's peace, like a beaten cu» into its kennel. i Mr J. J. Dougall said we must leave . things to Marshal Foch and his soldiers, • and thero was only one ending to the , war —the march or the Allies through • Berlin.
