The Merchant Servico Guild recently wrote to tho Shipowners' Federation asking 'tor a v.-xr-riak bonus of £3 a month for masters and officers on vessels undor CUD tons. Tho Federation is prepared to offer £2 only, and on Wednesday a. well-attended meeting of mombcrs of the Guild was unanimous in the hope that the owners would take ■ into consideration tho officers' position and grant tha request of £3. The seamen have already obtained a substantial bonus.

Miller Bros., Ltd., of Port Chalmers, ha*e purchased from tho Wellington, Havelock, and Moiueka Steamship Company tho old Wellington and Pelorus Sounds trader Manure®, which for eome timo has been laid up in Wellington harbour. The Manaroa will *>a occupied in tho New Zealand coaatal trado, and will later be used in the salving operations in connexion with tho v Waikare, sunk at Dusky Sound several years ago. This work will probably be commenced next month, and it ia considered that the chances aro favourable for eecuiing a quantity of fittings, gear, and perhaps somo of tho machinery. The Manaroa was built 21 years ago by Mr W. H. Brown, of Auckland. Ghc was trading acrosa Cook Strait for many years under the agency of Messrs Johnston and Co.
