PERSONAL NOTES ABOUT NEW ZEAL ANDERS. (FROM OUR OWN COEKESrONDEN'T.) LONDON, September 5. Eng.-Sub-Liout. John Le C. Morgan, R.N.R. (Wellington) (formerly Fitter 18549, N.Z.F.A.) has come to England to sit for his chief engineer's certificate, and he will probably bo ashore for the next six weeks. Sub-Lieut. Morgan transferred to the R.N.R. in March, 1917, and has spent the last seventeen months in a warship running in the Red Sea in conjunction with the Hedjaz operations. A Christchurch R.N.R,. ol'-licer—Eng.-Lieut. Watson —was serving in the same warship. Mr F. A. Parry and Mr S. Parsonson, N.Z. Y.M.C.A., have gorio to France to join the staff at the division, to assist in the forward work, Returned New Zealand soldiers who made frequent use of the Shakespeare Hut (Y.M.C.A.) while they were in London, will bo interested to know that during the year ended August 10th, tho number of meals served was 494,198, or about 1350 every 24 hours. Over the same period 95,307 bods were booked, representing an average of 260 men sleeping in tho hut every night. Lieut. Sydney M. "Wren, M.C., R.E. (Dunedin)'is leaving this week for New Zealand on six months' furlough. An old boy of Otago High School, Lieut. Wren was in Canada on journalistic work when war was declared, and was appointed military attache to a diplomatic commission to the Allies and i Neutral Nations, and afterwards was attached to the Atrocities Commission. Returning from Belgium, Lieut. Wren was app6inted to the lloyal Engineers on General Fitton's staff, and he served for two years in France until ho was wounded "at one of the early battles on tho Somme. For nearly a year past he has been attached to the headquarters brigade. While in Canada, Lieut. Wren was a member of Strathcona's ■ Horse.

Sub-Lieutenants J. S. Scrivener, It.N.R. (Dunedin) and K. A. Ditcham (late N.Z.E.), R.N.R., have both been promoted lieutenants. Both were formerly in the service of the U.S.S. Co. Lieut. Scrivener was mercantile marine officer in New Zealand, when he was discharged for war services in August, 1916. Lieut. Ditcham has also been in tho Navy since August, 1916, when lie was appointed to the cruiser King Alfred. Major G. U. Pridham, D.5.0., Royal

Tlio following Now Zealand doctors, who are captains in the R.A.M.C., have boon , restored to tho establishment: — Captain A. C. McMastor (Auckland) who, for some considerable time lias been second-in-command of t-ho War Hospital at Perth, and was previously resident surgeon of tiie Edinburgh War Hospital—an institution of 1353 bods. At the beginning of tho war lie served with ono of tho Lowland field ambulances. Captain A. G. Reid (Milton) who, after serving for some time at tho front, returned to his practice in East London about a year ago. Captain Reid also had considerable service at the front, aiiu was awarded the M.C. at tho battle of the Ancre, when lie was serving with a field ambulance. Captain Leslie N. Recce (Christchurch), who has had a considerable period of homo service, having been invalided to England as far back as August, 1915, to undergo an operation. On recovery he joined tho staff of the 2nd London General Hospital. Captain lteece, at the fall of Antwerp, was at a field hospital established at Femes under tho tegis of the Queen of the Belgians. Brigade-Major J. F. Dearden, D.5.0., M.C. (Christchurch), Royal Fusiliers, was admitted to the N.Z. Stationary Hospital in France recently, suffering from broncho-pneumonia, but he is now out of danger. The following New Zealanders have been discharged from the N.Z.E.F. for commissions in the Indian Army '.—Corporal M. A. Burrett, Ist A.1.R., No. 44-929; Rifleman' W. S. Hopping, 2nd R. 8., No. 54509, and Lance-Corporal C. F. M. Godtschalk, M.G.C., No. 23-1641. During August, Sir A. J. Godley recommended the following New Zealanders for Imperial commissions;— Sergeant T. Goudie, N.Z.A.0.C.; Sergeant W. A. Parrott, Auckland Regiment; Corporal L. C. Hanna, Auckland Regiment; Driver E. Earlly, N.Z.A.S.C. (M.T.); Private R. H. Rawnsley, N.Z.M.G.C., and-Gunner P. D. Laurie, N.Z.F.A. Capt. J. D. Denniston lias been promoted G.S.O. 2 from G.S.O. 3, with the temporary rank of major while employed in the place of Major XV. G. Maxwell. M.C., Gordon Highlanders. Lieut. H. Hamilton, R.N.V.R. (Wellington), who lias been attached for over a year to tho Admiralty Experimental Station, at Parkeston quay, Essex, has recently been appointed official photographer at the station, and he anticipates interesting work ahead. Originally the station was attached to the Board of Invention and Research, but now is controlled by the anti-Submarine Department of the Admiralty. Capt. R. G. Applegarth, who is now working with the American Red Cross in Paris, has lately been ill and confined to hospital for nearly two months. Capt. Applegarth previously had considerable service as assistant m A-ray work at ono of the French hospitals. A former member of the uow serving in the Navy is Mr J. 1. S. Barker, second officer tf- 1 ; 11 : tieroinc. Ho came from- New Zealand with the 7th Reinforcements as bombardier, N.Z.F.A., and was appointed junior officer, M.F.A., toward end jf last year. . On account of ill-health, the Rev. F. S. Hartley.is returning to New Zealand, and tin; Rev. P. i • Cullen, from the. 4th N.Z. Infantry (Res.) Brigade, is placed at the N.Z. Command Depot, Codford; the Rev. A. Jcrmyn, who was with the No. 2 N Field Ambulance,'is now with the 2nd (Army) Brigade, N.Z.F.A. In consequence of ill-health, contracted on active service, Captain J. It. Grey—son of Captain W. .f. Grey, Wellington—has been invalided from the Service, and expects to return to t he Pacific about the end of October. He has been under treatment at Guy s Hospital for tho past three months. Captain Grey has seen a. considerable amount of war service, and had successivo command of several patrol boats. One. of his vessels was IT.M.S. Chamberlain, which did duty in the North Atlantic and tho Irish Sea.
