Mr Massey said that, owing . to the greatly increasod cost of living, 1 the Government had been considering - the question of pay and a war bonus to officers in the Public Service, it had been determined to placo on the Estim- » ates for this year the sum of £589,000, m addition to the ordinary scale in--6 creases of salary to which public eur- * van to are entitled under the c.assifi--1 catkin schotno, also in addition to the r existing wdr bonus. The amount ex- ' pended in the war bonus last year in j the Service amounted to £463.000, and t it would therefore bo eeen that the i total extra amount to be paid to the , public servants, consequent upon the increased cost of living due to the war : was reprosentod by roughly £1,000,000 , P e _r nnnum. The additional sum of ( £oS™,OOO would provide for increased [ pay to cadets upon entering the nervice, an additional bonus to officers of the Railway Departraont, increased pay ' T !?? nuse . s to teachers and others in tlio Education Department, increased pay m the Prisons Department, and special oromotions. in the sorvice reoomraendocl by the Commissioner, in addition to the war bonus throughout the rest of tho services. These extra omoluments would be granted to the lower paid officials in the service, and it was hoped that tli& pnv res forred to would have the effect of roI'eving Civ:l Servants of the diffi-ullies ' wnicn tnoy had recently experionced owing to the greatly increased cost of : living duo to the war. ■
