The opening of the tennis season in Waiau took place on Monday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of players and spectators. Members of the club had done some hard, work to get the grounds in order, and ..the result was most pleasing. Mr F. S. Siorthcote,. president, officially declared the court® open for tile season. A match was arranged between the visiting players, a number of whom were present from Culverden and Lyndon, and the local players, but unfortunately at about 3.30 o'clock a heavy stowed of rain caused spectators and players . to seek' shelter, and a cessation oi play for the remainder of the afternoon. Only the ladies' doubles-and the men's doubles were ; got off, the result of which was as follows, the, visitors being mentioned first:— Ladies' Doubles —Mies V. Trareis and Miaa Hare 6 v. Afternoon toi was dispensed by the ladies of the club, and in tie evening on enjoyable dance was held'in tho Coronation HalL RAKAIA CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Rakaia Tenuis and .Croquet Club Mr J. Penny presided over a fair attendance. ' .The report and balance-sheet wore adopted. Notwithstanding a rather heavy expenditure during the year on repairs to ten ma courts and the formation of a croquet laws, the club ..was able to Show a credit balance of £27 10s ' It was decided to allot a sum of money Annually towards the payment of the salary ( of a caretaker for the tennis, croquet, and bofeling grounds. ... .The opening day was fixed for Saturday, Bovember 2nd,, to coincide with the opening • *t the bowling season. • The election of officers resulted: —Patron, .:. *rs 0.
