Percy Jackson (Mr Grcsson) pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempting to cross the railway lino in a car, wnile the lino was not clear. The prosecution alleged that defendant was going so trift that he crashed into a passing train, in spite of tho crossing-keeper s • warning. Tho defence raised was thatthe Court ot Appeal in October, Wl4, had declared the whole of tho railway | bv-law 38 void and ultra viies\ This decision had been confirmed by the Privy Council. His Worship reserved his decision to enable him to look up the eases referred to. DEFENCE CASES. For failing to attend drill, Ilarry R. church, breaking and entering and theft from the shop of Ernest William Christiansen. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, his previous bail being renewed. ASHBURTON. (llefore Mr V. G. Day, S.M.) A. W. Rubins, James Gooseman, and D. O'Sullivan were each fined 20s and costs for exceeding the speed limit with motor-cars. A similar charge against Mrs J. It. Ralyons was adjourned. John Shearer (Mr Kennedy) was fined 10s and costs on a charge of negligently driving a motor-car, and colliding with and capsizing a buggy driven by Mrs Stoddart. In Albert Betts (Air Buchanan") v. R-. McCaJluni. a trustee in the estate of the late Dennis Betts (Mr Kennedy), claim £10 12s 3d, judgment was civen for plaintiff with costs: in C. Clulds v. James Ilyland, claim £1 13s 6d, judgment was given for defendant; in Thomas Pcnnell (Mr Acland) v.
