BOROUGH COUNCILS.
NEW BRIGHTON. Tho New Brighton Borough Council met last night. Present—The Mayor, (Mr P. Kibblewhitc), and Crs. F. Christian, K. •orowning, C. leraelson, J. Buxton, E. A. - Leaver. A. W. Owles, C. -H. Wiimy, and P. Sincock. A motion of sympathy with Mr E. Smith in tho Joss of his brother, Private T. Smith, killed in action, was carried in silence. Further correspondence was received from Mr Jj. McArthur in connexion with tho proI posed 661 ar salt works at South New Brigh- | ton. j In reoe-iving the correspondence, the Mayor ' stated he felt suro that, so faT as the Council was concerned, all that could be done had been done. A petition waa being prepared by tho promoter in connexion with tho work. It was decided to eupport the petition. Cr. Owles promised to pay one day's wages of tho man appointed to take tho petition iround -tho district Mr Angus's, offer to eapply tar at a *crJam price was referred to tho Works Comjiitfcee* • At tho request of the City Council, it waa decided to undertake tho work of collecting tho lighting acoounts on payment of 2J per :cnt. commission'. Pormisoion was granted tho City Electricity Committee to crect a sub-station in Bercs--1 ford street. On the recommendation of tie Sanitary and Works Committee it was resolved: "That the I request of Miss Thompson and Messrs Wilson and Samuda for tho Council to continue sho brush barricade u further chain northward I bo granted; that the offer of Mr G. Lilley to j repair and paint tho Council's plant for the I -torn of £15 be accepted; that four drums of :rudo oil be obtained for spraying wateraoles; that a bonus of 5 per cent, on prevent contract ratce be paid to the sanitary j contractors for. tho duration of he war and is months thereafter,—Adopted. | The matter of a loan for completing tho .ormation of all nxuki in North Brighton waa further considered, and it waa resolved to write to the Waimairi and West Brighton Burgesses' Associations, pointing out that aa 'tho valuation of tho area waa only £3597, the loan limit, according to the Council's previous experience, would only bo somewhere in the vicinity of half tho amount required to do tho work. The treasurer reported as follows:—Receipts £161 5s 9d, expenditure £118 9s, balance general account, dr. £301 6s. Thirtyone building permits had been granted to date, having an aggregate value of £5745.— AdoDted. The Finance and By-laws Committee reported that with reference to the proposed road through R.S. .23574, it was resolved to recommend the Council to advise the eecictary of the South Shoro Syndicate that the Council's solicitor will bo instructed to peruse tho memorandum of transfer of tie roadway on receipt of the neccssary guar- | antoe, and that the solicitor's opinion be 'a-icen regarding the dr<-lica(if>n and formation of that part of the road. •i^ r was appointed the Council s arbitrator in connexion v/ith the leasing of tho pier. ASHBURTON. The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council was held last Light, the Mayor (Mr It. Galbrailh) presiding. ; Before proceeding with ttio orajjaiy business, a vote of condolence was passed to the widow and friends of tho late Mr C. VV. 1 Nicoll, on ei-mcmbex of the Council. The Mayor reported thai tho trnuk overdraft now stood at. £10,673 10s 6d, and that the receipts since last meeting had amounted to £256 7d. Correspondence was read from th» Board of Education with reference to the septio tauk, which it was proposed to install at the new Borough School, stating that Dr. Chesson, the District Health officer, still adhered to his previously expressed opinion that it would be advisable to havo the pan system installed till such time as there was a complete underground sewerage system installed in the borough. It was decided to meet Dr. Chesson tomorrow, and go into the question with him. The Railway Department wrote that in , response to the Borough Council's repeated lroquestß. it had been decided to-have the ! overhead ramp bridge at the railway station 1 j lighted up till 10 o'clock each evening, i A letter was read from the Electric Light | and Supply Company stating that serious in- ; termptione had recently taken pdace to light- , ing and power owing to the poor quality of the coal which had besn used at tho Coun--1 oil's power house, and reminding the Council, that the company had incuried an enormous expense on tba undertaking, and that ample power would be available from the Council's , power house.
