FIRES.

+ OUTBREAK IN THE CITY. 'At about ,3.30 a.m. yesterday a fire was (liscovered in the brick building at the corner of Hereford and Manchester streets, occupied by Messrs Rhodes, Ross, and Godby, the CanterburyFrozen Meat Company, and. others. The aiann was immediately given to the Fire Brigade, who were quickly on fcbe and soon had the fir© under. The outbreak,;which ira 3 discovered by Mrs J. Harrington, wife of the caretaker, oocurred in a small lumber room on the second floor, in the suit© i of rooms occupied by Messrs Rhodes, Boss, and Godby, and is believed to have been caused by th©''fusing of anj electric wire. The room was considerably damaged, but the rest of the building' escaped unharmed, though some damsgo was done in parts by smoke and water. The building, which is owned by Messrs R. A. Macdonald and Arthur E. G. Rhodes, Is insured for £7000, half in the Alliance Office apd half in the London and Lancashire Office. The office furniture of Messrs Rhodes, Ross, and Godbv is insured for £400 in tie j Alliaooe Office. i Credit is due to Mr and Mrs Harrington for the promptitude with which I they acted on becoming aware of the j fire, and to the brigade in confining it to such dimensions.

At "Wellington yesterday the City Milk Supply Co. were charged with selling watered milk, and wefe fined a nominal penalty of £3, it being proved that the responsible officers of the company had no knowledge of the adulteration. J. Bowler and E. J. Johnson' were fined £5 each, the Magistrate remarking that both cases were Hie result of carelessness.
