Every section of tho United States is being ransacked to furnish names for the hundreds of ship.s which are to be launched.. Indian names hare a leading place in this kind of nomenclature, though they are seldom correctly pronounced ; while names of owners, or their initials, have long placed American ships in a distinctive class abroad. The names of the great lakes'have been overdone; local prido is therefore having recourse to the minor lakes which dot the East. It is to be hoped that this form of patriotism will not be carried to the length of christening one of tho ships by the Indian name of the New England lake beginning with "Chargo'ggagogmanchoggogog, ' * continuing for a period through the alphabet,' and ending with a "gungamaug." i _____
