racing and trotting NOTES.

(BT "Lookeb-ON.") The annual meeting of the Amberley Racing Club will be held to-day. The first race is timed to start at 11.35 and the last at 4.5 p.m. Patrons will find the ordinary North line timetable convenient for getting to and from the meeting. Several horses engaged at Amberley to-day were sprinted at Riccarton yesterday, on the sand. Onslaught and Sir Fanciful were companions in a smartly-run four "furlongs tap the back. ' Daytime sprinted from the sevenforlong peg to the half-mile post, and put plenty of dash into his work. . Red Cent sprinted three furlongs up {he-back, while Kilrush was ridden out over four furlongs down the straight. a Art and Spangle raced home over the of a circuit. - The news that D. McKay had died bf wounds in France .was received at Riccarton yesterday with deep regret, fi ' Ho was an accomplished rider over - fences, and rode Art when he won. the I 'National Hurdles in 1916. £ The imported horse Cynic, by! Henry , the First—Cynane, has arrived at lticIsarton, and was out with F. J>. Jones's team yesterday doing steady paciug. He is* a tall bay, built, much on the lines of Good Hope, and well-mannered. It'is reported that Luff will not be runner at either the Amberiey or Ashburton Meetings. Saxby, • who was schooled at the barrier yesterday* was very green at tho business. Tho report- to be presented at the annhal- meeting of the Wellington Racing Club on September 27th states , that consequent, upon the reduction of racing days by the racing clubs in the .-Dominion, the club held only six days' rwihg during the' year under review,, as'against ten. days in the preceding year. The attendance of the public, considering the adverse conditions, has . been exceptionally satisfactory. No railway facilities . have been afforded other than the. ordinary train service, 'nndiio improvement in this respect is to be looked for during the continuance of the won In view of the extra ex- ' poise, incurred by the club's patrons on . this account, no charge has been made for,.admission to the outside enclosure. This; action occasioned a considerable 1 kesof revenue. At the request of the military authorities no liquor has been aojd on the racecourse grounds during the. year. This has resulted in a decrease of revenue of about £1000. Since the. commencement of the war the club hu-made large cash contributions to : tlw various patriotic funds, in addition 1 to which the club's buildings, furniture, catering plant, etc., hare been in use ; h»y the camp authorities, entailing ; costly replacements. The club's jockeys' and trainers' accommodation houses have been in continuous use by the ■ medical and nursing staffs of the mili- j tary camp, and the grounds are used ; daily for .training purposes. The total j Government taxation paid by the : club ! over >the • war period amounts to { \£s/,935 14s lid, and the sum of i £10,000 has'been invested in the New J Zealand Government War Loan. The j stewards feel that an apology is due-to < the publicfor the inadequacy of the ac- - eommodation provided at Trentham, which with the ever-increasing attend- t •nebs is now being severely felt. An j order had actually- been booked for I wilding material prior to the outbreak 1 <*;the war. This order was cancelled, , and the whole building scheme stands in ® abeyance until peace is again estab- ] fished. 2 The Amberley Racing Club has touted, members of the N.Z.E.F. foreign servioe branch to be present at their meeting at Amberley to-day. ' Soldiers m uniform will be passed. Nurses and returned soldiers in mufti can obtain °' tickets of admission at the CJXC. rooms. si A Press Association telegram from 1 Wellington states that the racehorse t< Has tie has been presented to the fund " i®! 1 -the Crippled Soldiers' Hostel, by c «t,E. Short, of Parorangi. (Bt "S*archiioht."J L Two trotting events will be decided D the Amberley Racing Club's Annual 9 Meeting to-day.
