OBITUARY.
4 MR A. O. BARNES. Mr A. C. Barnes, whose death oo curred at Rangiora _on Monday, ha been in New Zealand since 1800. lit was born in Ireland, his father being a captain in the Royal Artillery. Aftei ( finishing his education he entered upon a seafaring life, in the service of the P. and 0. Company. .At tho time ot the : Crimean war he wae in one of the company's vessels engaged conveying troops too and from the Crimea, and for his services was granted a military pension. For some time previous to coming to New Zealand ho_ was employed in. vessels trading with China and South America. On his arrival m the colony he first settled at Kaiapoi, and afterwards removed. to Saltwater Creek, where he lived a quiet life alono beside tho sea, spending a good deal of time .fishing. He had an interesting personality, and, being well read and intellectual above the average, nis company was. always a eource of pleasure to his friends. The death occurred at Kumara on Monday of Mr Patrick Kiely, one of the West Coast pioneers. In the early days on the Coast Mr Kiely was a traveller for the late" Mr W. 0. J. Kortegast, brewer, of Hokitika, afterwards becoming manager of the Erin-go-Bragb water-race at the Greenstone, a position which he held for years, eventually retiring into private life at Kumara.
