Stead have returned £ to Inrercargill after a stay in Christg church. Mrs and Miss Hazlett- (Invercargill) « returned home yesterday.' I Mr and Mrs W. L. Seay returned to „ Christchurch cn Sunday after a trip to ■ Sydney and Fiji. \ Mr and Mrs W. K. Macdonald and • family have returned to Timaru after a stay in Christchurch. \ Miss Millicont Jennings and Miss , Olive Ballantyne have left on a motor ' tour to South Canterbury. ] Mrs Valentine Moss has gone to Wellington, where she will reside for the \ next fow months. j Mr and Mrs G. H. Merton have re- ' turned from Timaru. 3 A dance was held in the Coronation , Hall, Spreydon, in aid of the Red Cross ' Copper Trail. The function was organ--3 ised by the Misses I. and D. Stuart, of ' Middleton, and resulted in about £'20 \ being raised for the fund, including £5 5s given by Mr H. W. Jennings. Mr C 11. .S. Thomson acted as M.C., and Miss — McDonald supplied the dance music, llie chaperons were Mesdamcs Dorman, Stuart, and R. Smith. Amongst those present were: Mesdames Goodwin, W. G. Smith, and Atkinson, and Misses Stuart (3), E. and C. Thomson, Goodwin. Narbey, Edwards, Dorirmn (2), McDonald, and Mossrs Harry Stuart, H. and V. Locke, Ablett, Hanna, Foster, Blackmore, O'Shannessy, Mole, Gee, Merrett, and Stevens. The death occurred on Friday, at ©nohunga, of.Mrs Elizabeth Yates, formerly Mayor of that borough. Sirs Yates and her late husband had tho tiniqiiG record of having both in turn occupied the mayoral chair. Mrs ■was elected Mayor of Onehunga in 1893, and continued in office for one year. She was the first woman to preside over a borough council in New Zealand. She was also the first of her sex .to be elected mayor of any borough in the British Empire. During her term of office Mrs Yates received visits from many distinguished people who visited j Auckland. By virtue of her office, Mrs Yates was also the only woman Justice of the Peace in tho British Eraniro at that period. This fact was referred to in a letter forwarded by the late Queen Victoria to Mrs Yates, expressing si tiefaction at the position achieved bv women in New Zealand. CLEG ! G—GOVER. At St. Mary's Church, Merivale, yesfc terday morning, Mr Walter Ciegg, of Christchurch, was married* to Miss Joyce Edith Gover, youngest daughter \ of Mr and Mrs F. Gover, of Auckland. ' The Rev. P. B. Haggitt officiated. Th© ' bride, who was given away by her ' father, wore an artistically cut bridal robe of white satin cliarmeuse, with a j satin train in tho faintest shade ofl a pink lined with ninon. A wedding veil! r of Brussels net arranged over a chaplet of orange blossoms was added, and . ' le r bouquet was of white cyclamens antl maidenhair fern, tied with pink and white ribbons. The bridesmaids were Misses Elsie Buchanan, EVelyn Price, and Beryl Crozier. Miss Buchanan wore a pretty fr ck of nattier blue nino - i with a Leghorn hat, Miss Price a pale fawn ninon frock and a black and white hat, and Miss Crozier was in pink crepe de chine and a black rose-trimmed liat lined with pink. All carried posies of primroses and wore the bridegroom's gifts, Nellie Stewart bangles. Mr Lewis Crozier was best man. while the groom siren were Messrs W. Watson and Coulthart. After the ceremony Mr anrt Mrs Gover entertained a number of friends at Broadway's. Mrd Gover wore a handsome black gown and hat with touches of mauve, and carried a violet bouquet. Mr and Mrs Clegg left later in the day on their wedding trip, the. bride wearing a smart navy costumo and a turquoise velour hat. TO-DAY'S RECIPE. _ Rice Scones. —Take Boz of uncooked rice, 2oz of flour, 1 teaspomful of sugar, quarter teaspoonful of salt. Put the rice, salt, and sugar into a saucepan with one pint of water and let it boil Then set on the sjde of the fire and : strain two hours with the lid close, or until the water is all absorbed and the ' h l ?®. soft.
