HORTICULTURAL CLASS. ' At a meeting of tho students of tho Horiicultaral Class conducted by Mr W. J. Courtier, Government Orchard Expert, an interesting address was given by Mr H. Firman, oh the lifo history of orchard pests, and Mr P. Cone spoke on the theory of pruning. It was decided that nest meeting should take tho form of a social evening. Several presentations will bo made. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. The' fortnightly social gathering of tho. Caledonian Society was largely attended last night. The president,- Mr C. S. Thomas, was in the chair, and was supported by Mr G. Ritchie, vice-president, and Mr A. Mc•Ktmzie, diioctor. The programme submitted was provided by Messrs A. MoKenzie and B..Moore. Piper Fowler played tho opening selection. _ Songs were given by Mrs Pearce, Miss Edginton, Mjrs Lewis, Messrs H. McLeod, W. Aitchison, Dickie, and Crowhuist. Recitations were given by Miss Manhire, Mrs H. McLcod, Mis Edginton, and Mr Mitchell. Mr H. Ogilvie contributed humorous eongs and etories; Miss Hobbs gavo a pianoforte solo; Mr Higman a whistling solo; the ewoid dance was given by MissesjAVaugh,, Foster, Beume 1 berg, Philpott, and ilnster L. Edgington, and a reel waa danccd by Misses Smith (2), Caldow, and Cunningham. " Mi® E. A. Smith played tho accompaniments for the vocalists. BURWOOP SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The Burwood School Committee met on Tuesdaj. Correspondence was received from tho Education Board, enclosing the inspector's report. It was decided that the stiitf bo congratulated on tho outcome of the recent examination. A letter from the Educational Institute regarding war regulations, was received. A circular from tho Patriotic Society, setting out the terms of free place scholarships in. regard to soldiers' children, was referred to the headmaster. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to Mr C. H. Opio in the death of his son. It was agreed that the Waimairi County Council be written to pointing out the danger of the present bridge on the road opposite Berry's. The chairman advised the headmaster to write to the North Beach Surf and Life Saving Club in regard to swimming lessons for the children of the higher standards, as the swimming pool noar the school was unsafe. SOCIAL TO DEPARTING SOLDIER. A very pleasing little function was held at Freeman's Cafe last evening, when between 70 and 80 people assembled as the guests of Mr and Mrs W. E. Munday, of Sprovdon. The evening was given in honour of Mr and Mrs Munday's son, Lnncc-Corporal Walter Munday, who is down on final leave. Each of the guests invited was asked to bring a parcel for tlie Lady Liverpool Trench Comforts Fund. Dancing, singing, and cards filled in the time till 10 p.m., when a delicious supper was served. After supper tho Mayor of Spreydon, Mr W. H. Winsor, congratulated Lanco-Corp oral Munday on tho honourable position he had taken up, the beat position under tho circumstances to-day. He also thanked Mr and Mrs Munday for the pleasant evening they had given them, and also upon its very worthy object. At Mr Winsor's call thrco hearty cliccrs wero given for tie host and hostess and their son. Lance-Corporal Munday thanked Mr Winsor for his kind remarks, and called for cheers for the proprietor of the cafe, who had kindly lent the room for the occasion. Dancing was then kept up till the early hours. NEW-BRIGHTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE. Tho New Brighton School Committee met l&3t night, Mr C. H. Winny presiding: The Education Board stated that it could not see its way clear to grant a refund of the sanitary charges. Messrs Winny nnd Christian were appointed to wait upon the Board in. connexion with the question. It was decided to inform the New Zealand Educational Institute that the school attendance had not suffered either through the War Regulations or abnormal weather condi'ions. A letter from the Social Hygiene Society was left in the hands of tho chairman and headmaster to deal with. A circular letter from the Canterbury Patriotic Fund, dealing with the question of bursaries for soldiers' children, was received. The inspector's report on tho recent examination was deemed to be satisfactory. Tho headmaster reported that tho roll number at the main school was 50S, and at the side school 63, the average aticrdar.ee being 447 and 49 respectively. Mr E. Langford, a member of the Visiting Committee, reported adversely upon tho condition of the building and grounds at North Brighton, and it was decidcd to acquaint the Board with the state of aSairs. \
