STRIKE IN AMERICAN PAPER MILLS.

— * MAY CRIPPLE PRESS. sa 4 •— W Y ° rk exchange > of July 27th, In view of the very great interest the people of this country «ow have in the operations on tho Western front in Franco, ifc is obvious that the daily newspapers of this country need every pound of news print paper which they can secure. , Th . e daily production is toms'ufßciont to meet these demands. Many newspapers have reserve stocks in storage, but there are many others without resorve stocks, and their position is more or Jess embarrassing, depending upon shipments getting through without delay. The recent walk-out on the part of union labour in news print mills still fuither ombarrasses the situation. In fact, if the men do not go back to work at once, the situation will be very serious in many offices. If the men do not go back to work, there will be a daily loss in production of 1030 tons. Tf the walk-out extends to stil] other mills the loss of tonnage will increase to just that extent. The labour situation is in the hands of the War Labour Board at Washington, and we are advised that notwithstanding the orders from the War Labour Board to the men to go back to work, they had, up to Thursday, refused to obey these orders. To what extent it may be practical to re-distributo the storage stocks now in tho hands of publishers to relieve those without reserve stocks is a problem that will demand and receive tlio attention of the Washington authorities, provided the men who have walked out do not immediately return to their work. Whatever may be in the minds of the men who have gono out, we do not know, but we believe that their course is meeting wittv the enthusiastic applause of the Kaiser. j We are advised that the War Labour Board has refused to take up any further adjustment of wages until after tlie men have returned to work.
