SOLDIERS' ORPHANS.
♦ ■ — BIG SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME. (press association telegram.) WELLINGTON, September 3. A deputation waited on the Hon. W. I. Harries (Minister of Railways) and the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald (Acting-Postmaster-General) in connexion with the project of raising £100,000 to fourta scholarships for the children of New Zealand soldiers and sailors killed in the war. . The object of tJie deputation was to inform the Ministers that a fund had recently been inaugurated in Trentham Camp for. that purpose. Major-General Sir Alfred Robin (Commandant of the Forces), Colonel H. R. Potter (Camp Commandant, Trentham), and Dr. W. J. Anderson (Director of Education) had been appointed trustees of the fund. Substantial donations had been obtained towards a big art union, and application had then been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs (the- Hon. G. W. Russell) f or permission to hold a raffle; but, ta the scope of the movement had grown so 1 much, and as thev thought of making it a Dominion fund, the Minister had asked the promoters to set up a strong supervising committee to con- • trol the art union. The Minister had given the necessary license to proceed with the art union.. To each district would be sent bayonet fighters and the Trentham Band, to let people see what was being done at Trentham in the way of training soldiers. Free railway passes and postal facilities were asked for. .Messrs MaoQonald and Hemes said that the matter would go before Ca'oinet, and would receive every possible consideration. i
