INQUEST. Mr T.j A. B. Bailey, District Corofcer, held an inquest yesterday into the death of William Grecmbank, formerly a greaser* in tho steamer Kamona, who mst his death on July •2nd, by falling into the harbour whilst in tho act of stopping from the Tarawera. on to No. 4 wharf. Constable Joyce stated tho circumstances uncfer which the fatality occurred, and referred to the efforts made to rescue the deceased by Georg© Fraser, third engineer of the Tarawera. Witness suggest- ! Ed that the body had _not come to the sur- ! face because it had bccome entangled under the wharf. An examination of the corpse ' disclosed that tho left jaw had been injured, probably by striking' the wharf whilst falling. ' Tho Coroner returned a verdict that deceased had been drowned ,by accidentally falling off tho s.s. Tarawera into tho harbour. GEXEROUS ASSISTANCE. The fund opened by the Mayor of Lyttel- : ton for llr W. Bowden, who sustained heavy ' leas, through his dairy herd and buildings being demolished bv a landslip, has been ; cloeed, £263 lis 6d 'having been subscribed, in addition to gifts of milch cows and springing heifers, with which to re-establish his , herd. I FLOWER DAY. ! The Lvttelton Branch of the Bed. Cross Society held a "Flower Day" in tho Port yesterday. The, Bed Cross workera were out on the streets at an early hour, with baskets of daffodQs ajid violets, gathered in Lytt©'ton and the surrounding bays, and the sale of buttonholes was continued until late in tho | afternoon. In connexion with tho effort, a I table covered with a Union Jack, was placad j on the roadway in of tho Poet Office, passers by being requested to cover tho flag 1 with coins. Tho flag, which was under the charge of Mrs H. S. Agar, was cororedby I coins and notes of various denomination. Tho amount raised was £51. •
