FOOTBALL ON SUNDAY.
DISCUSSION AT THE PRESBYTERY.
At yesterday's meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery Mr J. iS. Ttilloch drew attention to the fact that an inter-island jockeys' football match had been played last Sunday. Ho said he thought the matter should be taken up by the Ministers' Association. The Rer. J. Paterson said that the Presbytery should consider its authority in the matter. The match was, he understood, a private business, and played, he thought, on a private ground. "We cannot protest against it any more than we can protest againsi two " persona playing tennis on the if private grounds," added the speaker. The Rev. J. S. Reid said the fixture had Been held for several years past, but this year it had become more prominent. He thought it wrqng that any civic authority such as the Tramway Board should recognise it by running special trams. The Rev. N. O. White suggested that the jockeys should be approached with a request that in future the match be plaved on a week dav. He said he thought that if the jockeys wero approached properly they would not be unreasonable.
A committee, consisting of the Revs. J. Paterson and N. 0. White was appointed to act in the matter.
