Skinner, Commissioner of Crown Lands, returned from the North Island yesterday. The "Gazette'' notifies that tho At-torney-General has prohibited the sale of a pamphlet called "Gold for Iron/' purporting to be issued by the Auckland branch of tho Society known as "The Fellowship of Reconciliation." At 7.16 p.m. yesterday the Fire Brigade received a call to 45 Shakespeare road, occupied by Mrs Margaret Elmsby. A small fire in a box mattress was tho trouble. Tho insurance on the contents of the house is £100 in tho Commercial Union. Tho Hon. G. W. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, arrived from Wellington yesterday, and went on to Dunedin by tho express. The Minister will bo in the South for some days, as hp hopes to visit Dunstan and Invercargill. Later, .Mr Russell hopes to visit the West Coast. The Minister of Defence has received advice that owing to increased competition and decrease in the establishment at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and the Royal Military "College, in future only one candidate for tho former, and two for tho latter, can be accepted from any Dominion for any particular entry. ' At the meeting df tho Council of the N.Z. Amateur Swimming Association last night, the chairman, Mr J. R. Buchanan, made eulogistic reference to* the excellent work done for swimifting by Mr C. C. Bryant, who is shortly leaving for camp. Other members of tho Council made appreciative reference to Mr Bryant's work, and wished him good luck in khaki.
