OBITUARY.

1 The death took placc at Wellington | on Sunday of Mr Frank Galloway, who was closely associated with locaL football and athletic circles some years ago. Deceased, who was 46 years of age, had been ailing for the past twelve months, and about seven months ago he came to Wellington from Havelock to undergo modi en I attention. Four years ago the late'Mr Galloway returned to New Zealand from tho United States, where ho had resided for sSven years, and took tip a position on the staff of the Defence Department at Wellington. _He subsequently severed his connexion with the Department to take over the management of tho Commercial Hotel at Havelock, where he remained for nearly two years. Deceased is survived by a widow. There passed away a few days ag° a very old identity of Timaru in tho person of Mr Thomas Frederick Gooch, at the ripe age of 90. Old residents of Timaru will remember him as organist t<> St. Mary's Church from the year 1878 until his retirement from that position in 1907—a period of 29 years. Born in the year 1828. Mr Gooch lived under five Sovereigns, George IV., William IV., Victoria, Edward VII., and his present Majesty. In his early life Mr Gooch lived in Norwich, in England, and was a member of tho Cathedral choir in that city. Afterwards he saw activc service in the Far East, aid was present at tho taking of the Chinese fort Taku, on the Peiho river, in the year 1859. Mr Reuben Packard, an old and highlv-respected resident of Motupipi, Nelson, died last week. He was a son of the late Mr Joseph Packard, a pioneer settler who died a few months ago, and was born at Motueka in 1851. A few years later he moved to Motupipi with his parents, and had ever since resided in that district, where he successfully followed the occupation or a farmer. Deceased leaves a widow, and a son (Mr Chas. Packard), and a daughter (Mrs B. Baigent), both of whom reside in the district. Private advices by last mail contain tho news of the death, at Darnley, Yorkshire, of Mr Herbert Briggs, late of Wanganni. Mr Briggs was very popular when in Wanganui, and took a leading part in many public institutions. For some time hp played the trombone in the Alexandra Band, afterwards transferring to the Garrison Band, for which combination he aljo acted as deputy-conductor. The death has occurred at Wellington of a well-known resident, Mr A. E. Exley, of Lindum terrace. JEtosoneatli. Mr Exley had been ill for .i considerable time, and a few days ago underwent an operation. He got through the operation well, but later a change set in. For a number of years the late Mr Exley was a director of the Wellington Woollen Company. 7 A settler of more than 50 years standing died at Mangere, Auckland, last week—Mr William Gray, who had lived to the ago of 88. Mr Gray, v-ho was a native of County Down, Ireland, came to New Zealand about the year 1861 in the ship Columbus, which on a subsequent voyage was lost with all hands. He had followed fanning pursuits all his life. Mr Gray is survived by Mrs Gray, five sons, and four daughters. Four of his sons are farming in the Waikato, and another is Mr J. G. Gray, of Papatoetoe, ex-pre-sident of the Auclland Agricultural and Pastoral Association: The death occurred suddenly on Friday morning of Mr James E. Wheeler, grain merchant, Commerce . street, Auckland. Mr Wheeler was b nati-'e of that city, about 43 years of age. He married a daughter of Mr Elijah Spragg, who survives her husband. Mr Wheeler had been suffering with heart trouble for some time past.
