BiUeh caused a surprise in many quarters, Albion's victory over Marist Bros, was an unWpected shock to every follower of the game, will be remembered that last year, at . wdenham Park, a scratch Albion team de»»t«d Marist Btoa. by 8 points to 3, when ** latter were well in the running for tho *®atnpionship. Old Boys **M_aeeisted on Saturday bv H. Taylor, the All Black, who, _playing wing-three-quarter, ■Pot in some dashing work. " A very even game resulted between Morivale ' ; ; «dLinwood, and the spectators wero reward- . ■ hy tho fastest and moat exciting game so * Pj-this season. - It was chiefly a battle royal •*tween the two sets of ; forwards, tho Marv,

▼ale light pack playing up well against thoir heavier opponent©. The forward rushes frequently took the ball forty or fifty yordar— making the play strenuous and fast. Of the two sets of backs, Linwood handled the ball slightly better than their opponents, and that fact, coupled with tho excellent individual efforts of Hirst, accounts for Linwood's win. Merivale had two good chances of making the game a draw, one from a free-kick right _in front, which Pemberthy missed, and a kick at goal from a try alongside tho posts, which Williams missed.

Teams which won th© toes on Saturday were lucky in having the advantage of a strong wind at their backe* as in tho second spell the breeze was not nearly so strong. The place-kicking in the Albion-Marist Bros, game wae very poor. In the first spoil the Albion mon had fully a dozen shots from | fairly ensy angles, but not one was eucceseful. In the second half Marista also bod a I great number of ehoto, but not one was well directed. 4 j CANTERBURY RUGBY LEAGUE. Weak fielding by the Federal backß let French score an easy try, Smythe failing at goal. Sydenham attacked for the remainder of the spell. but shot weakly. Watson broke up a promising attack by Rangers, and play became very fast, neither side obtaining an advantage. At half-time thore was no score. In the second spell Nomads beoame aggressive, but the Rangers' backs were too sound. Beauvaia beat Grant, and sen# his forwards away per medium of Gray. The latter centred accurately. Swiit's clearance was faulty, the ball going to Lamont, who drove hard into tho net. After this reverse Nomadß strove hard to get on even terms, but tho whistle sounded with Rangers the winners by. 1 goal to nil. Mr P. Gill was referee^ OLD BOYS (4) v. ST. FOURTH GRADE. St. Albans 6 v. Mr Bunt's team niL B.GJL 1 v. D.I.C. nil. NOTES AND COMMENTS By defeating St. Albans on Saturday Old Boys have displaced the former at the head of the League table Rangers gained two more points at the expense of Nomads after a great tussle. Rangers wore without the services of Lusk' at loft back, but Lee, who seems to be the general utility man of the team, filled tho position with such good effect that the former's absence was hardly, felt. Bruorton's mothods of tackling a player are not always approved, by the opposition, and some feeling was shown towards him. Ensor was back in his old position at left half, and was ono of the best players on the ground. Coomber' is steadily improving at centre half, and shows good judgment when feeding his forwards. The Lilburn-Lamont combination showed remarkable trickincss, and initiated some clever movements. Barwell seems to have lost a good deal of his dash, and was hardly a sucoess. H&rker has apparently "come back" and gave one of his best displays between the sticks. Grogan, who recently returned from active service, turned out for Nomads, and played a s orli ggame in the half line. His inclusion materially strengthened the defence. Weak shooting was responsible for Nomads' defeat, numerous scoring opportunities being lost through this cause. Powell was the greatest ofionder in this respect. Ho showed very little judgment when within shooting distance, and frequently banged tho ball over the bar. Swift made some very emart clearances under the cross bar, but had no chance with the shot that beat him. At oentrc half Mitchell was very sound, but rather inclined to individualism. On two or three occasions his solo efforts came to nothing, when a judicious pass to his forwards might have been productive of good. The outstanding feature in the St. AlbansOld Boys match was tho clcver play of Mayo at centre half. It was mainly due to the precision with which he fed his forwards that Old Boys achieved their success. St. Albans's form was disappointing, and much below their previous efforts. Ths long passes of the forwards which have brovght success to the team in previous games were conspicuous by their absence, and litt'e or no combination was scon in the front rank. Tho halves worked hard, Flood in particular giving a fine display at centre half. The backs, Mahan and Hil Trove, tackled well, but frequently mis-kieked when hard pressed. EXCELSIOR v. WELLINGTON INSTITUTE.

A match is to be piayod at English Park this afternoon between representatives of tho newly-formed Excelsior Club and the ■ Wellington Boys'. Institute. This has been an annual match for some tinje past, though in previous years it has been between the Institute and Nomads, from which club tho Excrfsior Chib obtained most of its p'ayers. The Wellington players come with the reputation of being first-class exponents of tho game, and as the local team will be practically the same as that which won the third grade competition here last year a really good game should restlt. A small charge in aid of expenses is being mr.de, and the kick off will take place at 2.15 p.m.
