The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce yesterday passed a motion if condolence with tho relatives of the late Mr J. H. O'Halloran.

The Rev. Jasper Smyth arrived b.J the express \estcrday from Stewart ?c land, where ho has been acting as chaplain to the Church of England Mission. He intends to return to the island in October.

MY W. Sortnin Smith, who is retiring from the Government Insurance Depnrtment on superannuation, is one of the Department's oldest officers, having been a momber of the head office staff ever since arriving in New Zealand in the early 'eighties.

Prior to his departure for England, Mr A. F. McArthuv, of Papanui,- was presented with u money belt, and soldier's wallet, by the boys of his olara at the West Christchurch District High School. Mr McArthur recently gained his certi fl cate at the Canterbury Aviation School, and is going Home to complete liis training.

Lieutenant John C. Carter, recently awarded the Military Cross, is a of Mr John H. Carter, draper, of Wellington, formerly in business in Dunedin and Invereargill. Lieutenant Curler left New Zealand 'with the 17th Reinforcements, as second-lieutenant. On arrival in France, he was appointed to the 16th Waikalos. Six months ago he was made first lieutenant, and for some time has been officer of Lewi# mar hine-guns, in the Ist Auckland Battalion.

The Rev. J. W. burton, of Melbourne, author of several popular hooks on mission subjects, is ou a visit lu the Dominion in connexion with the Foreign Mission enterprise of tho .Methodist Church. Four years ago Air Burton went to for the pur-jios-j of organising mission efforts ifl that State. He has been very Miccesfrlul in this, and in addition, 'during flis stay, has iaken' the B.A. degree and qualified for the M.A. degree at :he University of Melbourne. To-morrow Mr Burion will preach at St. Albans Methodist Church in the morning, New in the afternoon, and Durham street in the evening. His evouing subject will be. "The Need of the Hour, a Bold Mission Policy."

Advice has been received by Juriss, wife of Lieut. Max Juriss, M.C., who was mado prisoner in the early stages of the war, that ho is about to bo exchanged as one of the officers who have been two years in captivity. The letter instructed his relatives here to send no further parcels of food, as he was likely to be sent either to Holland or Switzerland (for exchange) withia a few weeks. Lieut.
