EDICT AGAINST IDLENESS

Tho War Department officials have announced that after July Ist all loafers and men not engaged in useful occupations must engage in useful war work, or be drafted into the army. The occupations listed as "'not useful" after July Ist include gamblers, raco trackers, waiters, bar-tenders, club attendants, hotel attendants, apartment house attendants, persons engaged in games or amusements (with some exceptions), domestic servants, and sale clerks, lho plan is adjusted so that women may roplaco the men who are affected. Tins is the Government's most drastic action yet, and if it is strictly enforced it may stoj) professional baseball. NEW YORK, May 23.
Tho New York State Governor, in a proclamation, states _ that idlers, whethor rich or poor, will be forced to undertako war work after June Ist.
