SAILORS' DAY.

1 i*Sii3 REALISED. Yesterday's appeal in connexion with the Hritisli and Foreign Sailors' Society found a ready response frora the public of Christclum-h. and the collection is one of the most successful ever made in the city. The collectors were abroad by the early hour of a quarter to nine, and when three hours later the boxes of the first shift came in it whs found that they contained £307, making an average of over iM for each of the 70 collectors. The success of the appeal was due in a great measure to the energy and zeal of the col. lectors, who were untiring iu their eli'orts to inuke the day a record one; and it, was a brave man or woman who would venture to walk through the Square unless wearing the badee which was given only in exchange tor coin of the realm. There were 39 collecting stations, each named after a transport. The N "ream" idea of collection worked splendidly. each u>ani obviously doing its best- to be the leading "transport.'' In the Siptatv there wore n number of stalls from which sales took place of all manner of tempting things. The Sailors' Guild had a largo produce tent near the tram shelter, while opposite the Cathedral the Opawa Guild sold cnkeß. and the Sumner Guild sweets and flowers. The Victoria League had intended to conduct a luncheon stall, but decided instead to collect among themselves and band over the cash equivalent of their proposed effort. The Cashmere Guild had charge of tho refreshment arrangements at the Chamber of Commerce, the hall being used as the central depot for issuing badges and collecting-boxes, and for receiving the takings. I n all the appeal realised £86-3, made tin as follows : —Hoses. £721; stalls, Christchurch Ladies' Guild £55 Bs, Opuva Ladies' Guild £17 Bs, Sumner Ladies' Guild £41 18s.
