SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the South ltakaia. Road Board was hold on Thursday. Mr A. J. Magson was appointed chairman. Tho rates outstanding, it was stated, amounted to £15 13s lOd. and it was decided to sue for these forthwith. Complaints were received t-hat a building on the Poet Office reserve encroached on the roadway, and the matter was left to tho chairman and clerk to deal with. Subsequent to the meeting an inspection was made, and it was decided to ask tho Post Office Department to have the fenco and buildingmoved back to tho proper line. It wae decided to call for tenders for shingling a mile and a quarter of the Mit-cbani-Aehburton road. As t.be bridge at the four and a quarter mile peg on Thompson's track was out of repair, it was decided to close tlie 'bridge from 8 a ju. on May 13th till further notice. MEETING OF RATEPAYERS. The annual meeting of ratepayers of the South llakaia Road Board District was held on Thursday. Mr A. J. Magson. presiding. The balance-sheet flhowed a cash balance in hand of £T3'2 7a sd, as against £1171 10s Id at last annual meeting. The rates rccoivod amounted to £1017 2s 3d, and the Government subsidy to i'l7l Ms 3d. The amount of rates outstanding was £510 163 Id, but this has since been reduced to £15 13s lfd. The South Rakaia Cemetery Board account ehowed a credit of £17 17s 6d,*and tho Barr Hill cemotery account a credit of £G 7s Gd. The balance-sheet was side,pied. Mr Drummond asked for an expression oi opinion from those present as to the reccnt proposals for the abolition of tho Hand Boards, and the Hon. C. A. C. Hardy moved: —"That this meeting of ratepayers is well satisfied with the present Hoad Board form of local government, and «ees no necessity for a, change." Mr Hardy stated that he was entirely oppoecd to tho'eoveral "lar.ty" proposals now being discussed in the county, and all involving additional expense. A proposal had been mado for the formation of a Town Board, but he was opposed to that, ar.d was satisfied that the Ttoad Board was the bedy beat suited to the district. The other proposal, emanating from the MS. Hutt Road Board, to abolish tho Road Boards in favour of several counties, was equally absurd, and should not be thought of in war time. The motion was seconded bv Mr M Liddv ana carried.
