THE DEATH OF MR JOHN REDMOND.
OVERWHELMED BY T GRIEF AND WORRY. (From Australian Files.) LONDON, March 6. Mr John Redmond's health had been failing for some weeks. His grief owing to his brother's death, anxieties arising out of the condition of Ireland, and interminable interviews and consultations connccted with the Irish Convention, combined to undermine his remaining strength. Mr Redmond retained to the end strong hopes that the Convention would sometiow succeed. The Sinn Fein lawlessness caused him worry, but be regarded tho trouble as ephemeral. The King, hearing of Mr Redmond's death, has intimated his profound regret. Members of the House of Commons testify to Mr Redmond's single-minded nationalism and lifelong fidelity "ind strenuousnessr.. They_ say that he regarded the Sinn Fein outbreaks r.s wicked and insane. Colonel Craig, who always differed from him politically, but was captivated by his charm of manner, says that all regret the great Irishman. It is expected in Parliamentary circles that Mr Dillon or Mr Devlin will succeed to the leadership. The Press is full of graceful and ungrudging tributes, specially noting his patriotic war attitude. The "Westminster Gazette" says: "His death is a peculiarly ironical stroke of fate, when his lifework was on the eve of aecomplishm ent.'' The "Pall Mall Gazette" says that [he was noted for his unsurpassed j tenacity and deep understanding of politics, aud had no real enemies. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) TIMARU, March 16. A well-attended meeting of Irishmen, held to-day, carried a resolution of sympathy with the son and relatives of the late Mr John Redmond, whose life had been one long service of devotion to the liberty of Ireland. A second resolution, addressed to Mr John Dillon, offered sympathy in the death of the late brilliant and indomitable leader, and congratulated him on his election to the exalted position as reader of tho Irish race in the constitutional struggle for Home Rule in Ireland.
