The majority of those whose name# figuro in the abovo list of appointments to the Order of the British Empire have been actively connected with various organisations which have been engaged in patriotic work throughout tho Dominion sinco tho commencement of tho war. Tho list contains, in addition, the names of certain ladies and gentlemen who havo been prominently associated with tho activities of the New Zealand War Contingent Association, whoso headquarters are in London, while the names of officers of the ' , Dominion military" forces who have rendored valuable assistance in their respective spheres arc also includod. EXPLANATION OF THE OBDEB. In recognition of the manifold services, voluntary and otherwise, that have been rendered both by British subjects and their Allies in connexion with the war, tho King last year instituted two new Orders. The first of these styled "The Order Df the British Empire," and conferred, eis tho title indicates, for eervicos rendered to tho Empire, whether at homo Dr abroad, follows, in most respects, the precedents of other Orders or Knighthood; but it consists of nve Masses, and is given to women as n w ®" as men. The first two classes will, id tho case of men, carry tho honour Knighthood, and, in the case of the privilege of jirefixing the "Damo" to their names. , Tho fivo classes of the Order of tne British Empire are as fo' ows: MEN. 1.
