The yarding in- g eluded 2098 lambs, 1351 wethers, the balance being ewes. There was quit-e a number of lines of two-tooth ewes, and there was fair competition, prices reaching as high as 3Ds for a line of halfbreds. Of the total yarding Gl9O were passed at auction. OTAGO WOOL VALUATION. § (SPECIAL TO "TUB PRESS.") | DUNEDIN, February 27. • | The eighth of the series of wool valua- g tions in Otago and Southland was com- 9 menccd in Duncdin on Monday. The g condition of the Otago wool so far han- | died is very much superior to the ave- | rage Otago clip. , The experts say | that they have never seen better con- | ditioned wool, and the yield in hulk 8 will be equal to, if not above, the ave- | rage. The wool cheque for Otago I should therefore be appreciably higher than last year's. About 47,000 bales have been so far dealt with in Dunedin this season. THE CHAFF MARKET. IMPORTATIONS FROM MELBOURNE. a Consequent upon the high prices rul- r] ing for chaff, anil partly perhaps owing to the higher prices farmers expect, J local merchants are beginning to look ' abroad for supplies (says Tuesday's 1 "Dominion"'). The present prices for local chaff (prime quality) range from ( £7 10s to £9 per ton. One quotation received from Blenheim within the last few days was £7 10s, sacks extra. The ■, qualification puts another £1 per ton i on t.o the price, and on top of that ' freight, wharfage, and cartagc have to be charged. Another quote from Marton was £9 f.0.r., sacks in. Melbourne t can supply good chaff at £5, and the , price landed here would be £8 per ton ( approximately. The Melbourne chaff j is compressed into bales under hydraulic pressure, and therefor© sacks are no : consideration. The chaff, on being ; broken out, disintegrates easily. Tlie ■ range of prices for chaff in 1912-13 was from £4 l()s to £o 10s, so that the price may bo said to have doubled since the war—a factor in popularising motor traffic wherever it is possible in place of horse traction. (Received February 27th, 11.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 27. For a couple of days there has been a considerable boom in Broken Hill Proprietary shares in Sydney. They touched 75s and 'j3ceded to 725. Tho rise was loss marked in Melbourne and Adelaide. The cause of tho advance is not apparent. It is partially attributed to tho choirman'3 statement at the liaH-yearly meeting that the profits for the past year were £560,000, as against £!CO,OOO in the previous year; also to a. -rumour that it is the intention of the company to separate tho Newcastle steelworks from tho Broken Hill mining undertakings.
