Rifleman Frederick Joseph Hin© (died of wounds) left with the 26th Reinforcements. Ho was the youngest son of Mr James and the late Mrs Ellen Hine, and was born in Christchurch. He was educated at Mr Charles Cook s Warwick House School, and on leaving entered the employ of the lato Mr W. A. Day, grain and seed merchant, remaining therein until the closing up of the business. He was afterwards employed at the Canterbury Farmers' Cooperative Association, Timaru, where he was very popular in sporting circles. Later he joined tho Farmers' Co-opera-tive. Organisation Society of New Zca- J land, Ltd., Hawera, in whose employ ha remained until going into camp at Trentham. Mr W. Carroll, of Tinwald, has i«ceived advice that his son, Private Arthur Carroll, was transferred to tho New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurcli, on February 19 th. Mr George S. Maister, of Ashburton, has been advised that his youngest son, Privato Reginald Owen Maister, who left with the 17th Reinforcements, was killed in action in Franco. Word has been received from the Minister of Defence that .Lieut. C. H. Holmes, M.C., was wounded and gassed on the 19th inst. Lieut. Holmes gained his Military Cross some months ago for gallantry in the field at Passchendaele. Pie was a member of tho 18th Reinforcements" and attached to' the 12th Nelson Company, Ist Canterbury Battalion. Prior to going away with the forces Lieut. Holmes was employed in the legal firm of Messrs Meares and Williams, of this city. The Rev. W. F. Knowles, of Amberley, has received advice that Lieut. E. F. H. Knowles was not transferred to tho Officers' Convalescent Home, Brighton, as previously informed, but is on leave. He was lately mentioned in despatches by Sir Douglas Haig.

Staff-Captain Humphrey Holdernegs (wounded) is a member of a well-known Christchurch family, being the fifth son of Mrs J. C. Holderness, of Ranfurlv road, St. Albans. He was educated at Christ's College, where ho remained from 1896 till 1901. and he distinguished

On leaving Christ's College ho went first to Lincoln College and later joined the staff of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and for some years lie was a valued member of the Christchurch Football Club. Later lie was transferred to Timaru, where he continued his football career, and played half-back for South Canterbury. Captain Holderness left with the Rifle Brigade. He may truly be said to come from a fighting "family, for, besides himself, there are five sons with the Colours, and the remaining one was rejected for defective eyesight.
