FAILURE TO ENROL.
PUGILIST SENT TO GAOL.
A well-built young man 'named George li. Murphy (Mr Moody} was charged in the .Polico Court at Auckland on Monday, before Mr F. V. I'laser, S.M., with failing to enrol in the Expeditionary Force lieserve. Sub-Inspector Broberg said defendant, who was a tingle man, was a» pugilist, better known as liert ATurCounsel for the defence so id that Murpbv was conducting a boxing school." lie had stated that he had sent in his national registration papers, but this was not correct. He suffered from lapses of memory, owing to injuries received while prize-fighting. He had an injured foot, which would debar hini from service. Counsel asked that defendant be not sent to gaol.
The Magistrate said if he acceptod all that counsel had said it might be thought that he, the magistrate, was also suffering from a lapse. If the defendant was capable of conducting a business, no should have been capable of remembering whether he had enrolled. He would be sentenced to one month's imprisonment with . hard labour, and the military authorities would be notified when* he was released.
