1 THE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP PROPOSAL. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGKAM.) WELLINGTON, January 24. Tho Minister of Public Health, referring to the proposal to establish a New Zealand rosearch scholarship in connexion with cancer, said, without deprecating the possibilities of New Zealand students, it appeared to him ihat the establishing of a research in such a hidden disease as cancer in a small country like this, was not likely to obtain trie value secured by the work being done in Britain, where so large a number of men of experience and high scientific attainments were studying th 6 question. In New Zealand eliorts had been made to co-or-ciinato the public health service with the British Medical Association, and some timo ago a request was made to tho Association to devote attention to the preparation of material for a publication dealing with cancer in Now Zealand. The Department undertook that all tissues and other clinical material forwarded - by medical practitioners for pathological examination would treated by the department. The Minister said the dc.ath rate fi om tuberculosis in New Zealand had fallen from 16 per 10,0uu of population in 1875, to 6J in 1915, and the death rate from cancer had steadilv ricon 2 per 10,000 in 1875, to 8.9 .in l!)lo.
