SPORTING.

ft RACING AND TROTTING NOTES. (BT "Looker-UN.") The outside of the course proper at Riccarton was available for fast work j yesterday,' but most trainers pre-1 ferrcd to use tho plough, which had been watered overnight, and was :n capital order. Margorine did half to three-quarter pace on the plough. She was followed by Battle live, who ran six furlongs in good time. Marsinah galloped five furlongs in useful time, and Biplane finished i'.p two circuits at 'half-pace wit-li a sprint ovej- the last three iurlongs. He was not asked for his best. Bore, who is very backward, galloped seven furlongs in slow time. He did not make as much noise as iormerly. Glendower was too good for Partisan at the end oi ten iurlongs on tiie plough. The first part was run much too fast, and the pair were stopping badly over the last bit. the time was only moderate. There was very little to choose oetween Jeannot and Harlequin at ..lie end of a mile run in rather slow tini*?. Asealaphus, whose knees are loosing bumpy, ran a half on the bit m fair time. The two-vcar-olds, Uondago, Loch Weir, and Afterglov,', were sprinted down tho straight half-mile, but were not out to make time. Long Range, Sir Fanciful, and Counterscarp were given the same work. Don Francisco, who lias_ just been taken up, was given trotting exercise in the middle. Fiery. Cross ran six furlong* in good time, and finished well. Disdainful and Scornful were companions in a sprint over five furlongs. Wardancer, with a very small boy up, galloped eight iurlongs. He appeared to be taking things easy, but registered rather good time. Jingo was restricted to half pace work "while Daytime was kept at walking exercise. Kilrush beat Henrictte over five furlongs on the course. Phil May, with a feather-weight up, showed plenty of speed over tho first three lurlongs of a six-furlong gallop, but was stopping at the end. Winter Cherry was sent a mile. She began very slowly, but finished rather well. Red Book was too good for Tyne over six furlongs, but the time was not of the best. Merton dashed over four furlongs in great style. He was carrying a big weight, and it was a smart performance. Thestius showed more speed than ; Subterfuge over the early stages of a six furlong gallop, but the latter was an easy winner when the post was reached. As usual, Mr J. E. Henrys's adjustments for the C.J.C. Midsuiumor Meeting appear on schedule time. In starting the Midsummer Handicap with Adjutant at 9st 91b, he did as everybody expected, but it was not thought that lie would, start the weights quite so high. Margerine itc 9st on her recent form, over twelve furlongs at Wingatui reads well, while tho same may be said of Multicipal Bst 51b, Ascaiaphus Bst 21b, and Red Book 7st 121b. (Bt "Searchlight.") Very little work of importance took place at Addington yesterday. Agathos, driven by N. L. Price, was responsible for a nice work-out over a mile and a half. The son of 0.Y.M., in charge of ,C. Johnston, leaves for Dunedin to-day. Erleen (harness) and Lucy Wallace (saddle) were companions in a useful work-out over ten furlongs. Lucy Wallace showed to advantage, pacing in good style. Osier, with V. Alborn In tKe saddle, trotted freely over a mile. The son of Willowwood is engaged at Forbury Park, and should run well. • E. McDennott worked a promising maiden trotter by Advance over two miles, which, for n novice, showed good form. Merry Soul was worked in saddle, and allotted sprinting tasks over short courses. He is engaged, at the Nelson and Marlborough Meetings next month, and should pick up a stake. A. Cox gave Marietta long, steady exercise. The Marvin Wilkes mare showed a nice turn of speed in patches, and is improving. N. L. Price sent Panama and Sweet Nut along at half to threeHiuarter pace, both moving very pleasingly. They may be seen out at the Akaroa Jockey Club's Annual Meeting. Arcadian, in saddle, did circuits at half-pace. The son of Woodland Whispers is under orders to leave i'or Dunedin this week. V. Alborn, with Fernleigh, Osier. Ringleader, Lucy Wallace, Voter, and Auriferous, leaves for Dunedin to-day to take part in the Forbury Park Trotting C'lub'js Summer Meeting.
