CASUALTIES.
TWO GIRLS DROWNED

WANGANUI, January 23. While bathing in ' the Wanganui river, near Castlecliff, this afternoon, two girls—Phyllis Walker, 16, and Ida Becker, 10—were drowned. Phyllis Walker, who could not swim, got out of her depth, and Ida Becker, who could swim a little, tried to save her, but they sank together. Three youilg girl companions could not render any assistance, but ran screaming for help. A number of men who were working in the locality went to the scene, but the spot where the two girls had disappeared could not be definitely located. Dragging operations were carried on for about an hour, and both bodies were recovered from a hole, where the depth of the water was over 10ft. Artificial respiration was tried unsuccessfully. Ida Beckcr was an only child. A your,£ man. named G. Dickie, -ras knccked down by a motor-car at the corner of Cnshel street and Oxford terrace yesterday. He was taken to the Christchurch Hospital. It is understood that an examination disclosed the possibility of internal injury having been received.
